Final Fantasy VI Review
by Philip Burns
This game is to many the greatest rpg ever made, and frankly i don't get it!
What makes this game so great i ask you? The fact that it has way to many characters
(14 in all), and the only thing this does is take away from the development of
the main characters for some scrubs you don't give a damn about (Relm, Strago,
Gau,). Maybe some call this the best because when it was released back on the
snes in '94, it probably was the best, the graphics were top notch for those days,
and the music is still amongst the best. Let's get a little more in depth.
STORY
Pretty much same ole rpg stuff here, Kefka trying to take over the world,
and you trying to stop him. Sure their are a few twists here and there, but nothing
you haven't seen before. One of the best parts of this game though is how the
game has you split up into 2 or 3 parties, you really had to even out your groups
on some occasions. For instance the last battle, Kefka's tower, each group has
to go a separate way, and their is a boss each way, so you better not make 2 of
your groups hardcore, then your last group a bunch of pussies, cuz it ain't gonna
work for ya. I also liked how you had to go find all of your characters during
one part of the game. Some holes here though, the game never gets back into Gau's
story (as if anybody gives a damn), and it seems the game went away from Celes
& Locke.
Score: 6/10
SOUND/MUSIC
You know I can really careless how good the music is in an rpg, and very few
games have I actually remembered the sounds from the game. But this is one area
where FF6 shines like Vince Carter in the slam dunk contest. Simply beautiful
sounds throughout this game, everything fit the situation perfectly, the theme
song never got old, only better. And what else can I say, it just doesn't get
better than this musically. My only complaint is no voice overs, but that's not
enough to keep me from giving it the perfect score.
Score: 10/10
GRAPHICS
Another nice area for FF6. This is probably the best use of sprites i've ever
seen. Such a leap up from FF5 it isn't even funny. The FMV was very lackluster,
you get a little at the beginning, and a little at the end. Overall FF6 handles
it self well in this department, even with the beautiful games of today.
Score: 7/10
GAMEPLAY
The gameplay centers around the Esper system this game has, which was ahead
of it's time. You have to give each character an esper, and in order for you to
learn the magic that the esper has, you have to get Magic points by winning battles.
It's pretty sweet, and you can also call the espers during battle like with summons,
but only once per battle. Also you get to control 4 characters in battle instead
of the dreaded 3, which is a huge plus. Pretty good battle system all in all.
Score: 6.5/10
REPLAY VALUE
None really, i don't know why you'd play this one again. Maybe if you missed
some of the Espers, or want to uncurse the cursed shield, or kill all 8 dragons.
No different endings or anything. You will miss a small scene for each character
you don't have at the end, so i guess you may want to replay it for that. You
pretty much have to have different endings these days to have any kind of real
replay value for an rpg.
Score: 4/10
OVERALL
Well, this was my first time playing this game, while most of you played it
on the snes way back when. So maybe that's why i didn't think it was all that.
I liked it pretty good, it's no FF8, or even 7 for that matter, but it sure does
make FF5 look like an expired product.
Fav Character: I guess Edgar, but none really stand out to much.
Least fav character: Cyan, Gau, Relm, Strago.
Best fighter: Edgar, but i had Celes with all the magic so i guess her. Edgars
attacks are the best.
Worst fighter: Relm, Strago.
Biggest surprise fighter: Umaro, man that guy kicked some major ass.
Favorite part of the game: The end tower type place, it was so well done,
i loved having to fight the statues with each group (you can actually warp out
of there, and have your best party fight all of the boss fights) , and everything
was done so perfectly in this place, great place to finish a game. The Bonus stuff
was fine, but nothing special.
Time to complete the game: A little over 40 hours.
Final Score: 6.5/10
