Author's Words A few things: 1. If you have the manual, read it. Can't stress this enough. 2. You do NOT need to have played Shadow Hearts or Shadow Hearts: Covenant to enjoy the game. 3. I've done my best to cover everything. If you find something that's not mentioned here, email me: cs_avalon19 at yahoo dot com and I'll see about it. One thing, though: I *REALLY* do not like badly worded, misspelled emails lacking punctuation. If you're going to email me suggestions, complaints, flames, or questions, at least make your email look like you've learned some basic English. I don't mind a small spelling/grammar mistake or misplaced punctuation mark, and I'm pretty lenient on people who are not fluent in English, but I don't have the time to decipher emails that look like you failed elementary school. Another thing: If you're not comfortable with my listing your real name in the Credits, put in your email the name/alias/pseudonym/nom de plume you'd like to be credited as. I generally do not post other people's email addresses in the Credits because I hate spam just as much as you do. In case you don't get a reply from me, don't worry. Sometimes I get so busy I may not respond to emails, but submissions will always be credited. 4. I will mention parts of the story in my walkthrough, but I'll try not to spoil anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Controls Left analog stick: 1. The Judgment Ring, Combos, Stellar Charts, Stuff That's Already in the Manual and I'd Wish You Read That First The Judgment Ring: The Judgment Ring is a circular disk that determines all actions. The disk itself is white, with colored segments. When attempting an action, a needle will appear on the Ring and begin to spin. Hit the colored segments to stop a needle on that section to execute an action. While the Judgment Ring is primarily used during battles, it can also factor into whether or not you get a discount shopping at Gerard's, selling your old gear for a higher markup to Gerard, or winning the best prizes at Lottery games. The Judgment Ring in closer detail: The colored segments (called hit zones) vary depending on what you are trying to do. Trying to land all perfect strikes? Hit that red sliver tacked at the end of each orange hit zone. Want to give that enemy a holy smiting for KO'ing a favorite character? Hit the green Step Areas, then hit for the blue Modulate Area (or the red Strike area, if you have a good eye). Should you fail to hit a hit zone, or let the needle spin one rotation without taking action, the character will either miss a turn or have their attacks carried out prematurely. Customizing the Judgment Ring: Want to jazz that Ring up? Through the "Ring Customization" option, you can add or subtract hit and strike areas, increase the size of said hit and strike areas, attach a status effect, even change what type of ring for that character. Normal Ring -- Your average, standard Ring. Actions will be carried out prematurely if you hit one segment but miss on the next. Technical Ring -- the Hit and Strike Areas shrink a little, but you'll do more damage and get more out of support spells. The downside is, miss a segment of the Ring and your whole turn is negated. Practice Ring -- If you miss a segment, your turn won't end. However, you won't be able to hit Strike Areas, because there's none. Gamble Ring -- There's only one small Hit Area, followed by a sliver of a Strike Area. If you manage to land on the Hit/Strike Area, it will be as if you've landed on all the Hit/Strike Areas of the Judgment Ring. The location of the Hit and Strike Areas also change slightly for this ring. Don't use this Ring if you plan on using the Mind's Eye accessory. Some are better than others, so play around with it to suit your style. If you're really horrible at the Judgment Ring, you can set it to Auto Ring, but this comes with some pretty big disadvantages. (Besides, where's the fun in that?) Hit Points, Magic Points, Sanity Points: If you've never played a Shadow Hearts game, or an RPG for that matter, this section's for you. Hit Points -- Your character's health. This is represented with a blue gauge. Some characters will have high HP, others won't have as much. You lose HP when you get attacked in battle, Poisoned, or Deadly Poisoned. You can restore HP using: 1. Cure/Cure Plus/Cure All/Arc Cure Stellar Magic 2. Thera Leaves/Seeds/Roots/Extracts 3. using a Tent at a Save Point or the World Map 4. checking Johnny's bed at the agency and choose, "Maybe I'll take a break." 5. Curvy Hilda's Full Bloom ability 6. Ricardo's Serenata skills 7. La Sirene's "Cure Plus" and Tirawa's "Shining Zephyr" abilities When a character's HP drops to zero, that character will become Unconscious and be unavailable for the rest of the battle. Dead characters will be revived at the end of battle with 1 HP, but they'll get no EXP. If you don't want that to happen, you can revive the dead person with: 1. Raise Up/Resurrection Stellar Magic 2. Talismans of Luck or Talismans of Mercy 3. Mao's Sake ability 4. Curvy Hilda's Happiness Gift ability 5. La Sirene's "Resurrection" ability Characters gain more HP as they gain levels. Characters can also equip accessories that will affect HP, but the effects only last as long as the character has the particular accessory equipped. Accessories that affect HP: Shell Bracelet -- Prevents Poison/Deadly Poison. Ashra's Earrings -- Increases maximum HP up by 20%. Sarape Adorno -- Ricardo's unique accessory. This restores a set amount of HP during battle. HP can be increased permanently with Seals of Life. Magic Points -- Your character's magic points. MP is represented with a purple gauge. You need MP to utilize special skills and Stellar Magic, from Johnny's 1 MP-cost "Snap" to the 88-MP cost "Red Gravity" and the ever-increasing "Entrance" Stellar Magic. Some characters have high MP, others won't have quite as much. MP can be lost through expending it on skills/Stellar Magic, or the Mental Breakdown Status Abnormality. MP can be restored through: 1. Ricardo's Serenata abilities 2. Mana Leaves/Seeds/Roots/Extracts 3. using a Tent at a Save Point or the World Map 4. checking Johnny's bed at the agency and choose "Maybe I'll take a break." When a character's MP drops to zero, he/she will be unable to use special skills/Stellar Magic until you restore it. Alternately, if a character gets afflicted with the Seal Status Abnormality, he/she will be unable to use skills or magic until you get rid of Seal or the battle ends. Characters gain more MP as they gain levels. Characters can also equip accessories that will affect MP, but the effects only last as long as the character has the particular accessory equipped. Accessories that affect MP: Silver Bracelet -- Prevents Mental Breakdown Oracle Earrings -- This will increase maximum MP by 20% Priest Earrings -- MP consumption down 20% Wise Calmet -- Natan's unique accessory. This will restore a set amount of MP during battle. MP can be increased permanently with Seals of Aura. Sanity Points -- This has been around since the first Shadow Hearts, but for the new players, Sanity Points determine how long your characters can withstand a battle against monsters. Some characters have high Sanity (Shania and Hilda), which makes them quite durable during long boss battles. Others will have low Sanity (pretty much everyone else). SP is represented with an orange gauge. Being unique to the Shadow Hearts series, Sanity Points are a little different from HP and MP. All characters will start out with full Sanity at the beginning of battle, and Sanity will decrease by a point every turn a character gets. For example, if a character has 9 Sanity Points, that's nine turns which you'll have control over their actions before they go off the deep end (read: go berserk). Having a character run out of SP and go Berserk is NEVER a good thing. While you might get some funny animations out of it (like Johnny fainting in the midst of battle), and the off-chance that a Berserked character will kill off the last enemy, Berserked characters get NO EXP. In addition to getting no EXP, Berserked characters will start acting erratically, from healing the monsters' HP to killing off allies. You can also lose SP by getting hit with SP Lowering, which halves SP, or the Panic Status Abnormality, which causes the victim to lose three times as much SP than normal. Panic isn't something to worry about if the victim has high SP (Shania/Hilda), but for everyone else, especially Johnny, it's like a death sentence. Cure it ASAP or end the battle quickly. An easy way to determine who is about to go Berserk is to check the Turn Priority, which is displayed in the upper left corner of the battle screen. If a character's portrait is red on later turns, it means that character is about to run out of SP and go Berserk. Use a Pure item or SP-replenishing skills on that character to keep him/her in check. Shania's fusions consume a set amount of SP every time she's in one of her fusions. Shania in her Thunderbird/Tatan'ka/La Sirene/Tirawa forms is no different than just fighting as Shania alone aside from gaining access to Special Skills, but staying in her fusions will eat through her SP pretty quickly, especially early in the game, during those Shania-only fights, and very long boss fights. One thing to note -- very late in the game, Johnny acquires a second talent in addition to his "Handy Tools" skills. This second talent is similar to Shania's fusions, as it consumes SP. But there's a catch: Johnny has far fewer SP than Shania, so WATCH IT CLOSELY. Unless you have a boatload of Pure items to keep Johnny from going insane or have characters with SP-restoring skills fighting alongside Johnny, leave Johnny the way he is. You can restore SP/cure Berserk with: 1) Tatan'ka's Howling skill. 2) Ricardo's Serenata abilities. 3) Pure Leaves/Seeds/Roots/Extracts. 4) Ending a battle. SP is the only stat that can drop to the negative digits. This is NOT a good thing. Characters gain more SP as they gain levels. (The only exception is Hilda, who has 40 SP throughout the whole game.) Characters can also equip accessories that will affect SP, but the effects only last as long as the character has the particular accessory equipped. Accessories that affect SP: Will Power -- prevents SP Lowering Huge Jug -- SP will drain every other turn, but this will lower stats. Small Jug -- SP will drain twice as fast, but this will raise stats. Blood Jewel -- should someone actually go Berserk, this will restore SP if you successfully land on the hit zones of the Judgment Ring. Dark Angel -- raises maximum SP by 20%. Flare Brooch -- reduces the amount of SP consumed for Shania's Fusion and Johnny's second talent. This accessory will also boost Shania and Johnny's stats. Monk Earrings -- EXP earned in battle goes up 20%...Max SP drops 20%. SP can be increased permanently with Seals of the Soul. The Stock Gauge: The Stock Gauge can be found below a character's HP, MP, and SP gauges, and can hold a maximum amount of 2. It's yellow-green in color, and getting damaged in combat will build up the Stock Gauge. Carrying out attacks of your own and restoring HP will build up Stock as well. Certain abilities, like Tatan'ka's Inspire or Ricardo's Distant Tomorrow (Serenata --> Old Man's Diary --> Melody: Passion) can help fill the Stock Gauge faster. Enemies and bosses also have Stock Gauges, and it works exactly the same way. However, if they get even so much as 1 Stock, chances are they'll use a Double or a Combo and attack someone twice. Rule of thumb: Never let an enemy get close to having 1 Stock. Either physically Hard Hit or cast Hard Hitting magic/abilities to take it away. Attacking: There are four different attacks when you just feel like drawing a little blood. Normal -- Just your average attack. Pushes the enemy back a little. Hard Hit -- You'll hit harder than normal, and any Stock the enemy has accumulated will be gone. Requires 50% of your own Stock to execute. While doing a combo, you can only use Hard Hit as a combo finisher. High Angle -- Send an enemy flying into the air. Good for those air-based combos. Knock Down -- Knock an enemy down to earth. Magic: Magic in this game is utilized through Stellar Charts, and in Shania's case, through her fusions. Magic requires MP, and offensive magic targets different height zones. Magic is divided into seven different classes, with six having their own opposing elements: Earth <--> Wind Fire <--> Water Dark <--> Holy The seventh, None, is just that: non-elemental. Stellar: Basically a magic spell. Needs a Stellar Chart to be properly used. Stellar Magic follows the same variance of attack types as physical attacks (Normal, Hard Hit, High Angle, Knock Down). Stellar Chart: A chart symbolizing one of the 12 Zodiac signs, capable of holding Stellars. Each node is not always the same shape, and may also not be at the same attribute level. Triangle -- Support spells Circle -- Healing spells Square -- Offensive spells. Not all Square nodes are equal, though. Red: Fire Blue: Water Green: Earth Orange: Wind Light Yellow: Holy Purple: Dark White: Non-elemental (any colored Stellar can be placed in this node, provided it's at or below the attribute level.) Want to change those Stellar Charts? Buigen can upgrade and modify those charts to your liking, at a price. Levels -- The maximum attribute level of each node is 4. You can place a Level 1 Stellar in a Level 2 node, but you cannot place a Level 2 Stellar in a Level 1 node. Effect Up -- This increases the power of offensive Stellar Magic. This does not affect the Stellar itself, only the node. MP Cost -- Comes in three flavors: 0% off (default), 25% off, and 50% off. Investing cash on this attribute will lower the cost of MP needed to cast Stellar Magic during battle (or healing magic outside of battle). All upgrades affect only the nodes for that given chart, and are permanent. The Stellars themselves are not affected. Not all Charts are created equal. Experiment with them and determine how you want them to be. Keep in mind Shania cannot use Stellar Charts, let alone equip them. List of Stellar Charts and their locations: Aries -- Frank's default chart Taurus -- App Beast Med IV Pit Fight reward Gemini -- check the sewer grates in Harlem Cancer -- Johnny receives this from Buigen in Times Square Leo -- Quiz reward at Arkham University Virgo -- Hilda's default chart Libra -- Natan's default chart Scorpio -- talk to Loloma in Moana Village after clearing Vilcabamba Sagittarius -- Ricardo's default chart Capricorn -- Mao's default chart Aquarius -- Caribbean Snap Trade reward Pisces -- Lottery reward in Chicago Special Abilities: These are abilities that are specific to a character. Johnny -- Handy Tools, ??? Shania -- Fusion Natan -- GUN-FU Frank -- Ninja Arts Mao -- Drunken Fist Hilda -- Magic Arts Ricardo -- Serenata Height Zones: New to the Shadow Hearts series is the concept of height zones, similar to Xenosaga II's hit zones (but better executed in SH:FtNW). There are three height zones: Air Midrange Ground The height zones factor into whether spells will affect the enemy or if that combo even goes through. One way to tell if a magic spell will affect the enemy is to see the color of its data box -- if it's blue, it'll go through, and if it's red, the spell will miss entirely. Physical attacks generally fall into the midrange zone unless you're doing a combo. Combo: Combos involve two or more party members attacking the same enemy, and requires 1 Stock. The first person starts off the chain, and if you successfully hit all the hit zones for the required attack, the Ring will begin to spin, showing a random symbol. Pressing the correct symbol will let the combo go through, pressing the incorrect symbol will end a combo early. If the first chain is successful, you'll have the option of picking the next person to continue with the combo. When doing a combo, you will be unable to use a Hard-Hit attack or Hard-Hitting skills or Stellar Magic (like Johnny's Phone Call skill, or the Red Nova spell). However, Hard-Hits can be used as a combo finisher. Double: Do two different actions in one turn. Requires at least 1 Stock to utilize it. Double Combo: Do two actions and start a combo. This action will require 2 Stock. Same basic principle as the Combo and Double modes. Combo Magic: When doing a four-person combo, occasionally a new option, Combo Magic, will appear. This will only appear on the last person who's got 2 Stock, that's how much it costs to use it. The first time you get the Combo Magic option, you will not know what type of spell you'll get. Available Combo Magic is dependent on whoever's in your active team -- having a party of Shania, Frank, Natan, and Mao (dark, light, wind, water) will not get the non-elemental Tempest spell. You will, however, have a 1 in 4 chances of getting the water-based Shock Max spell. Once you've cast a Combo Magic spell in battle, the name of the spell will show up in the list, taking out the guesswork. All Combo Magic requires 64 MP to use, and everyone can use it, including Shania. List of Combo Magic: Strong Earth -- Earth Flame Mine -- Fire Shock Max -- Water Air Shot -- Wind Holy Pulse -- Light Meteor Burst -- Dark Tempest -- None, Hard Hit Single Input: If you're not very good at picking the right symbol during the middle of a combo, you can go to Options and set Single Input to "ON". What's Single Input? It's basically the same as making a Combo. Have someone start a Combo, but rather than going to a random symbol for you to press, you'll be asked to pick someone else to continue the combo. This continues to the last person, and once you've decided on the order of your characters and what attacks they'll use, execute it. The Judgment Ring will show up and you'll need to hit all the Hit Areas. Successfully hitting all the Hit Areas will execute the whole combo, without the need of pressing a random symbol to continue. Affinity: Affinity is a numerical value that tells whether or not two particular characters are on good terms with each other. Affinity is gained through a variety of ways: combos, and just having the characters fight alongside each other. The higher the affinity, the more combo damage that can be inflicted. Status Abnormalities: Occasionally while you're running around and getting into battles, someone in the party is bound to get hurt in more ways than just losing HP. Poison -- You'll lose a set amount of HP every turn. Deadly Poison -- Same as Poison, but you'll lose even more HP every turn. This will occur if an enemy poisons someone already afflicted with Poison. Some bosses can also use Deadly Poison without having to normally Poison someone first. Paralysis -- You can't move, your turn will be skipped. Mental Breakdown -- You'll lose a set amount of MP every turn. Seal -- You won't be able to use anything that requires MP. Apathy -- No Stock gain. Panic -- SP will be consumed three times as much. Berserk -- The only way you'll be able to get this Status Abnormality is if you run out of SP. Berserked characters will begin acting randomly, from healing an enemy to killing off other allies. Petrify -- You get turned to Stone, you'll lose any turn that comes up, and if an enemy takes so much as to sneeze at you, you're dead. Death -- Well, what can I say? You're dead as dead can be. While most Status Abnormalities will be cured at the end of battle, having an entire party paralyzed, petrified, or dead will result in a game over. Although not really Status Abnormalities, these can be and will be inflicted on party members from monsters and bosses: P-Attack Down -- Reduced physical attack. You'll do less damage with physical attacks. P-Defense Down -- Reduced defense. You'll take more damage from physical attacks. Sp-Attack Down -- Reduced magic attack. Your spells will do less damage. Sp-Defend Down -- Reduced magic defense. You'll take more damage from spells. Speed Down -- Reduced speed. You'll have to wait longer for a particular character's turn to show up. Evasion Down -- Reduced evasion. You won't be able to evade from physical attacks easily. SP Lowering -- Your current amount of SP is halved. Blood Loss -- Your current amount of HP is halved. The Judgment Ring is not immune to status effects, either. Fast Ring -- Speed is doubled, don't blink. Fickle Ring -- The needle will act randomly, slowing down and speeding up at inopportune moments. Small Ring -- Shrinks the Judgment Ring. Tight Ring -- Shrinks the hit zones of the Judgment Ring. Blind Ring -- All hit zones will disappear. A side effect of the Mind's Eye, Magic Mind's Eye, and Extreme accessories. Fake Ring -- Additional, dud hit zones will be added to confuse you. Up Ring -- The needle will start off normally, and accelerate quickly through the rotation. Reverse Ring -- The needle will go counterclockwise rather than clockwise. Random Ring -- The needle's spin will change each time the Judgment Ring shows up on the afflicted person. Status Abnormalities can be treated with Soul Benedictions, and Ring Abnormalities can be removed with Phoenix Tails. The Heal/Arc Heal Stellar Magic will remedy both Status and Ring Abnormalities. Daphne Fruits will also remove both Status and Ring Abnormalities. Berserk, however, can only be cured by Pure items/SP-restoring skills. Most Status and Ring Abnormalities will wear off about five turns into battle. The only abnormalities that don't follow this rule are Berserk, Petrify, and Death. Certain accessories block Status Abnormalities, and some nullify more than one. Pocket Watches will block ALL Ring Abnormalities. Most abnormalities will go away at the end of battle. Property: There are four options in this category. Inventory -- See what sort of items you've collected along your journey. Skill List -- See what skills your characters have. Library -- See what sort of interesting people and creatures you've met along your journey. Score -- See how you're doing in the game. If you ever get Rank 1, don't get too excited, it's only for bragging rights. How to Read This Guide: In almost every section of the guide, on the right-hand side there are info boxes detailing items that can be found for the area you're in (ITEM LIST), as well as the enemies you'll encounter for the area (ENEMIES). Breaking down the ENEMIES info box: No. XXX ENEMY NAME -- The number and name of the monster/boss according to the library, or Johnny's Snap Cards. LIMITED -- If this shows up, it means once you're done with a particular area, that monster will no longer show up. This does not apply to bosses, for obvious reasons. Pit Fight(s) -- That monster/boss can be found in that particular Pit Fight in Arkham University once you've cleared Roswell. Snaps -- How many Snaps you'll need to have for yourself as well as Snap Trading. If there are no Snaps listed, or a 0x Snap, it means you can either receive it in a trade (therefore you don't need to Snap the monster in battle), or you can get it only through a trade. Cat Coins -- The type and number of a particular Cat Coin the monster turns into with Mao's Cat Touch skill. This will not show up if the monster cannot be Cat Touched. Stuff that doesn't show in info boxes but important/relevant will be under "NOTES". If a note says "GOING OFF THE BEATEN PATH", this means there are one or more sidequests you can partake in and earn some bonuses, be it new skills or items. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. My father and sister died, trapped in a blaze of burning crimson. If I try and remember anything else, it's terrifying." --Johnny Garland Prologue: The year is 1929. In New York City, a suspicious man hires Johnny Garland, a private detective who lost his father, sister, and memories in a car accident a few years ago, to capture an escaped convict on the lam. When Johnny finds the suspect, a Window opens and a monster appears, devouring the man right in front of Johnny's eyes. The monster turns its focus on Johnny, but a bird-like, yet human, spirit crashes through the skylights, saving Johnny from certain death. Once the battle's over, Johnny will notice something on the floor and pick up a Cure Stellar. You'll get an option on whether or not to view the Stellar Magic and Stellar Chart tutorial. Your choice, but manipulating the nodes on the Stellar Chart isn't as hard as it looks. Place the Cure Stellar on Johnny's chart. Instead of heading up the stairs, head right, and take the first left, going north. Examine the chest to pick up a Thera Leaf, then head through the double doors. There's a thug guarding a chest, defeat him. Examine the chest to find a Leather Belt. Leave. Back in the hallway, head down, and right. Go through the first doorway you see on Johnny's left. Head right to find a second thug guarding a chest; defeat the enemies. Examine the chest to pick up an Aqua Edge stellar. Leave. Back in the hallway, head all the way right (ignoring the corridor), and left, down the stairs. A thug will ambush Johnny. Defeat him, and head down the stairs to examine the area where the thug was standing earlier. You'll find a Seal of Luck. Head back up, and go all the way left, back to the other staircase. Head up the stairs. In the first left there's a thug and a Save Point, but you must defeat the thug if you want access. Once the thug's gone, save your game if you wish. Ignore the door left of the Save Point, Johnny will comment that the door won't open and that it's probably locked. Head back out to the main hallway, and go right. Enter the double doors in the middle. Head right to find a chest, it contains a Tent. Leave and go back to the main hallway. Head all the way right, ignoring the second left corridor. There's a chest at the end of the hallway containing a Thera Leaf. Go back to the second corridor to be confronted by another thug, guarding the double doors. Defeat him, and enter the door on the left side. Inside, before you head down the stairs, go left. There's a Pure Leaf hidden in the corner. Once you have it, head down the stairs to find a little boy wearing a straw hat, Actually-Scared Tom. Johnny and Tom will chat about a scary man near the fire escape for a bit before they get ambushed by more thugs. Defeat them, and return to Nancy. Tom will mention about the fire escape, and how the door's mechanism works. The two kids will run off, leaving Johnny alone. Head back up the stairs, and take the first left, where the locked door is. Save your game, and check out the door. Outside, head left and up the fire escape. Head right and open the door. The suspect, Marlow Brown, seems to recognize and know something about Johnny, but before Marlow can explain things, a monster comes out of a green portal and devours Marlow right before Johnny's eyes. Talk to the front row student wearing an orange vest, Curious Harris, and he'll mention that Professor Gilbert's sealed-off research room is nearby, but the door seems to be broken because no one can get in. Leave the University building and head back outside. Outside, run left, all the way left. In the next screen, continue running left. There's a hidden chest near the light post, open it and you'll be rewarded a Mirage Stellar. Examine the door nearby, Johnny will try to open it and then comments that it's locked. Shania will suggest that maybe someone knows how to get to Gilbert's lab. Head back inside the University building. Inside, head up the stairs, and this time, enter the right hand side classroom. Head to the front of class to find a single person, Knowledgeable Jefferson, near the desk. Talking to him will reveal how to get there: taking the underground path near the sports field. Jefferson will also mention that the underground path has no light and that there's a lantern in the chemistry lab. Check out the space beneath the desk to find a Soul Benediction. Leave for the chemistry lab and take the Lantern. Leave the building, and head right. As Johnny leaves, Gerard and Buigen will show up again. They forgot to explain to Johnny that Buigen can alter Stellar Charts, from changing the attributes of the nodes to reducing MP usage. You'll get a option on whether to see the Stellar Chart Realignment tutorial. Your choice if you want to view it. Once that's all been said and done, Gerard and Buigen will be available for Johnny's shopping needs. There's also a nearby Save Point. Head right. Foley the P.E. At the next intersection, go right and flip the lever, lowering the barricade and creating a shortcut. Turn around and head left. There's a lever near some caged monsters, flip it. Defeat the monsters and examine the chest to pick up a Bright Rage Stellar. There's a Save Point right before the door. Open the door to trigger a scene that shows the Gentleman in the Suit releasing some caged monsters. Johnny and company will show up to find the monsters beating someone up before the monsters turn on them, going into battle. Defeat them. Once the monsters are gone, the Gentleman will be amazed at everyone being able to defeat the monsters while he was "hiding." Johnny isn't too impressed by the man and demands what the Gentleman is talking about. The Gentleman narrates his story about how he came to be, which makes absolutely no sense to Johnny. Afterwards, the Gentleman will introduce himself as Frank. Johnny will mention they need a key to unlock the door leading to Gilbert's lab, and Frank knows just where it is. Johnny will automatically be back in the underpath, with Frank as a playable character. Turn around and go back into the room where Frank introduced himself. To the right of the door is a chest that holds a Soul Benediction. Leave. Head down, right, continue right through the shortcut, and go down. Go right to open the door and Frank will reveal his method of unlocking the door. Examine the door to enter. Head up the stairs. Turn left, run up the stairs. Check out the drums to pick up a Dark Edge Stellar. Go north, up the stairs to find a Save Point. Head left and up the stairs to enter a storage area cluttered with junk. Examine the chest under the table to find a Leather Cap, and head through the left door. The crew finds Professor Gilbert studying a book at a table and confront him on what exactly is going on and why would the University have monsters on campus. Gilbert admits he got a little carried away by his research and asks about the case he hired Johnny for. Johnny admits Marlow got eaten by a monster and demands Gilbert if he was involved. Gilbert denies being involved in Marlow's death, but before Johnny can truly get to the bottom of things, Gilbert opens a Window and a monster appears, but quickly gets killed. Gilbert takes the opportunity to escape as another monster appears from the window. Search the area to find a Soul Benediction. Back to the game. Head right, in the direction of Capone's cell. A prisoner, Smith the Swindler, will call out to Johnny. Smith explains the door in the aisle is a metal detector, and won't allow anyone with weapons or dangerous materials through. Smith will give Johnny an insulating sheet if he can find a spoon in the prison cafeteria. Head down, and go left, hugging the wall until you see a pair of double doors. Go through there, and you'll be in the cafeteria. Check the "island" and press X. You'll hear a chest opening and obtain a Spikes accessory. Head right, and examine the sparkling item to receive a Jailbreak Spoon. Examine the (incredibly well-hidden) chest nearby for an Sp-Attack Down 1. Leave the cafeteria and go back to Smith to exchange it for an Insulation Sheet. With the Insulation Sheet in hand, everyone can now get their weapons through the metal detector. Now in the upper cell block area, Gerard and Buigen are here, behind bars in the right cell block, first floor. They may be in jail, but their services are still available. Back to item hunting. Check out behind the stairs of the right cell block to find a Thera Leaf. Continue right, don't take the stairs. When you see Buigen's motorcycle come into view, head right, into the corner, and press the X button repeatedly until you hear what sounds like a chest opening. You'll receive a Hail Dust Stellar. Turn around, and go left, all the left, ignoring the stairs. Go down when you have the chance, you should barely be able to see the top of a chest. Examine it for a Hit Area Expand. Once you're done looking for items, head north, go right, and go through the doors. Head north and through another door for a short cutscene. The power's been cut, so it's time to find the breakers. The chest next to the electric door has a Mana Leaf. There's a Save Point nearby too if you need it. Turn around and go right. Open the door and you'll be in the control room. Examine the breakers on the wall and Johnny will notice they've all been blown. Mao suggests finding someone who knows how to fix it. Head back to the lower prison block and talk to Smith. In exchange for information on the breakers, Smith asks Johnny to convey a message to Murdock. Murdock is in the upper right cell block area, on the second floor above Gerard and Buigen. Talk to him and Murdock will mention that the amps on the first row go from 1-6, left to right. Murdock tells Johnny to deliver the same message to Peck. Peck is in the lower left cell block, on the second floor. Talk to him and Peck will say that the amps on the second row go from 6-1, left to right. Peck will tell Johnny to deliver the same message to Baracus, who's imprisoned near the sewers. Head down to the first floor and go right. Go past Capone's cell (or go in and save your game), and go up. Baracus is the first prisoner you'll see, and he's quite social. Baracus will tell Johnny the amps on the third row go from 1-6, left to right. Head back to the control room. You'll have an option on reviewing what was said to Johnny earlier before messing with the breakers. First row: 1-2-3-4-5-6, must equal 15 amps Second row: 6-5-4-3-2-1, must equal 7 amps Third row: 1-2-3-4-5-6, must equal 10 amps Whichever numbers you choose, the power will be restored. Before leaving, go to the alcove behind the breakers and examine the cabinets for a Pure Leaf. Leave the control room, and head right. Go down to find two chests. The right chest holds a Dark Edge Stellar, and the left chest contains a Tent. Go back to where the electric door is, use a Tent, save your game, and head outside. Check the door behind Zett to be given Level 2 clearance. Go up and check the right corner for a Mana Seed. Turn around and go back to where you found the Daphne Fruit. This time, follow the path until it leads left. Check the door and it'll open for Johnny. Go up and check the door to enter. A ninja dressed in pink will be looking at some huge glass tubes, and Frank will call out to her. Britney the Ninja will hand a Secret Message to Frank, and leave. When everyone's done talking, run to the corner right of the door and examine the area for a Keycard No. 3. Examine the glass tubes Britney was looking at earlier to obtain a Seal of Wisdom. Backtracing a bit, head back the way you came in. Go all the way back to the room Hilda and Roger were imprisoned in, and head south. This time, go left to find a storage room. In the storage room, there's a row of drums, a blue drum with an X marked on it, a red drum with a skull and double-cross bones marked on it, and a yellow drum marked with an open flame. Examine the blue drum for a small scene, and Frank will learn a new Ninja Art -- Seismic Wave. Examine the boxes across from the drums to obtain a Slow 1. While you're still here, check out the chest near the researcher for a Tent. Talk to the researcher and wonder what "LITTLE" is supposed to mean. Leave the storage area, and go back to the room where Johnny and Frank encountered Britney the first time. This time, continue on into another research room. Head left and open the chest for a Surge Stellar. Talk to the researcher with his hands arms folded over and ponder the significance of the word "MEN". Leave the room. Head down, right, and at the intersection, go up and check the door on the left. You'll be in the main room of the facility. Gerard and Buigen are here if you're low on supplies. There's also a chest a couple feet away from them that holds a Lottery Ticket. There's also an opening a couple feet away from where Buigen is standing, go there and head right, following the path to a chest that contains a Ring Fragment. Go back, and head up the stairs. A researcher, Morrison's Brother, will accuse Johnny and his party of being intruders. Hilda charms the researcher into giving up a secret: the main computer, Mother, requires three passwords to deactivate the security system. If you've been following the guide, you'll already know what the passwords are, but if not, you're going to do a lot of backtracking. Or you could continue reading. Before you mess with the computer, go left and down the path. Check the empty chair below the scientist on the right for a Talisman of Luck. Continue down and open the chest you see and take the Heal Stellar. Go back and check out the large monitor. The computer will ask Johnny to input the password. First password: LITTLE Second password: GRAY Third password: MEN Inputting the correct password will allow access to the elevator nearby. Leave the room, go right, and take the elevator. After the ride, go left. Save your game, equip all active Stellar Charts with the Red Nova Stellar (provided the chart has the appropriate slot) and the active team with Pocket Watches and go up. (If you intend on bringing Shania, make sure Thunderbird has the Evil Shade spell, or Ta'tanka with the Red Nova spell.) Hilda will reveal her true nature right before things go downhill. Yeah, you read that right. He also has a move that will put someone into Tight and Reverse Ring Status, but you shouldn't worry about it if you've equipped Pocket Watches on everybody. So what are you going to do? If you read a little earlier, I did say you should equip all active Stellar Charts with the Red Nova Stellar. You'll be relying on that to decrease this boss's Stock if you don't want anyone finding themselves on the wrong end of a double attack. Since the boss is Wind-type, the best elemental spell to use is Rock Bump, as well as Hilda's Thorn Whip, though anything that does Special Damage will help. Be sure to heal every now and then! After the boss fight, Johnny asks the head of the facility, Luther Strange, if Gilbert has been around the facility. Luther will say Gilbert just quit one day to investigate Chichen Itza, in southern Mexico. It will take days to reach there by land, so Natan suggests taking the boat there. Johnny adds that Lenny could probably secure them a boat in New York City. Back at the World Map, the Upper West Side is the only option available, so go there. +---------------+ |UPPER WEST SIDE| +---------------+ Johnny will ask Lenny to find the fastest boat o---ITEM LIST-------------o possible, and Lenny agrees. Lenny also suggests | | that everyone stay for the night, as it's been a | Weekly Arts 1....._____ | while since the start of their journey. | | o-------------------------o Sometime during the night, Lenny gets startled by Hilda (in her curvy form) looking through the bookcase. You'll get a tutorial message on Hilda's different forms. HILDA'S FORMS: -------------- By consuming kilocalories (referred from here as calories), Hilda can change into different forms and access different skills. Having -99 to -11 calories will put Hilda into the Slim form. Low HP, high MP, and her Magic Arts will specialize in offense. Having -10 to +10 calories will turn Hilda into the Pink Bat form. Overall HP and MP will be halved, but physical attack will go up. Having +11 to +99 calories will transform Hilda into the Curvy form. High HP and low MP in contrast to the Slim form, but her Magic Arts will focus on healing and supporting the party (except for Grand Slam). If you get to -100 or +100 calories, Hilda will go into her Mask form. Aside from her stats going through the roof and wearing a mask during battle, this is no different than if she was in her normal Slim/Curvy forms. The Mask form lasts only three battles, and after that, she turns into the Pink Bat with zero calories. Certain items will decrease/increase Hilda's calories. The Fruity Fiber will decrease calories by -25, and the Angel Souffle will increase calories by 25. If you don't want to use those items, the other way to manipulate Hilda's calories is by using Calorie Drain on enemies during battle. Some enemies will have negative calories and some will have positive calories. If Johnny's Snapped/obtained a Snap Card of a monster, and the party encounters that monster in battle, that monster's calorie info will be displayed right next to its name. Example: o-----------------o | | (X standing in for a numerical value.) | ENEMY -X KCal | | | (-X Calories mean they have negative calories | XX HP | for Hilda to consume. | XX MP | X Calories mean they have positive calories. | | Not all monsters have equal amounts of o-----------------o calories.) Hilda asks about an old magazine and Lenny tells her she can have it, as he was planning on throwing it away. You'll get another tutorial message about her Special Skill, Magic Arts. By reading Weekly Arts magazines, Hilda can learn new skills. This time she'll learn the Grand Slam skill. (People who have played Shadow Hearts: Covenant will recognize the origins of this skill.) In the morning, leave Johnny's agency. Outside, Cheeky Joshua will run up to Johnny blabbering about a real ghost this time. Run left and check the dumpster to exchange any Ring Fragments you've found in the game for Attack Boosts. Leave the Upper West Side. On the World Map, Chichen Itza will be marked next. Go there. GOING OFF THE BEATEN PATH ------------------------- If, for some reason, you didn't obtain the "Seismic Wave" skill for Frank, what are you waiting for? Go back to Roswell and get it, otherwise you won't be able to pick up Frank's other skills later in the game. It may have sounded like random chatter, but Joshua might actually be onto something. Thanks to Professor Gilbert's sudden absence, the faculty at Arkham University has had to hire a substitute in his place. Whether you tell the truth or blatantly lie, Anne will eventually throw the "suspect" back in prison. However, nobody stays behind bars for long in this game... After the party's second jailbreak, Shania suggests that the party explore the area for a little bit, and to see about the Ocean Spirit Zonda mentioned back at the Grand Canyon. Johnny will notice a treasure chest and automatically open it, recovering everyone's equipment. There's a Save Point nearby, too. Go back to where the entire party had been imprisoned earlier. After everyone's done talking, check out the locker in the shack for a Lottery Ticket. Leave the shack, and go right. Check the helm right of the shack for a Pure Seed, and head into the cave. Continue left on the bridge and Johnny and Shania will notice two guards. Those guards aren't about to move for them, so what are you going to do? Head back out, and go down the ramp, past the Save Point. Head all the way down until you get to the beach. Position Johnny behind the interrogation barrel and press X to find a Paralysis 1 in a treasure chest. Talk to the sleepy man in the interrogation barrel, Napping Galbez, and he'll say that there's a creepy area near the sunken ship. The ship itself has plenty of ghosts and monsters, too. Galbez also isn't too keen on doing guard duty, so Shania and Johnny agree to "go" on guard duty for him. Go back towards the direction of the cave, and Johnny will automatically run and hide as the guards go looking for something to eat. With no guard on duty, Johnny takes the opportunity to head for the ship. Head down the steps and examine the boat. Shania and Johnny can see the Ocean Spirit shrine, but they can't reach it without turning the rudder. Johnny will head back inside. Turn right and press X, you'll hear a chest opening and you'll get a Hail Solid Stellar. Go up and go left. Right before the opening, there's a chest. Open it and take the Apathy 1 inside. Head through the opening. Head up the ramp to a small room. Examine the deck brush leaning against the wall and Johnny will take it with him. Go further into the room and examine the shelf on the left wall for a Mana Seed. Head down the plank and return to the room with the ladder. Climb the ladder to go back to boat deck. Examine the capstan and Johnny will place the deck brush into the hole, and turn it. Once the canoe's been lowered down, cross it to the other side of the ship. Open the door to access what appears to be an empty room...or is it? Cross the room and examine the treasure chest in the southeast corner for a Daphne Fruit. Hug the south wall until an opening in the wall appears, continue south. Head right, and climb the ladder. Examine the helm and Johnny will rotate it, moving the rudder. Go back down the ladder and head into the room. Leave the room for the boat deck. Seems like Anne and her pirates are in trouble, and guess who's got to help them out? Defeat all the enemies, and once everyone is on the same boat (no pun intended) on what exactly is going on, head down to the hold, and go right, all the way right. However, if you haven't been leveling up those Statues, though, you're going to be in for a slightly tougher fight. Attack, heal, and if Shania has enough stock, double attack. Afterwards, Shania will gain La Sirene's power, as well as another tattoo on her body. In the Captain's room on Anne's ship, Anne explains why her crew of pirates have been guarding the Ocean Spirit shrine. Shania thanks Anne for looking after the place, but they are interrupted soon by Borriello. He says Al Capone has left Chicago for Las Vegas, saying something about McManus and Edna. You'll be taken to the World Map, and Las Vegas will be added to the list. However, Chichen Itza still isn't available. Before going to Las Vegas to gamble away your hard-earned Cash, let's go back to the Caribbean Pirate Fort and pick up a few items. GOING OFF THE BEATEN PATH ------------------------- Before returning to the Pirate Fort, stop by the Grand Canyon and talk to Nvwoti. He's got info on a new UMA around the Caribbean. It doesn't take long | | before McManus' men realize Ricardo is still o--------------------------o alive. At this point, you'll be taken to the Battle Team menu. Ricardo will become a playable character, and at this point of the game, he can't be switched out, so decide who should be in the active team. Afterwards, you'll get into a battle with several gangsters. Defeat all of them. After the battle, Ricardo will search the area and pick up a Fade-fast Flower. This brings up a quick tutorial message on Ricardo's Serenata ability and Muse Items. Ricardo can play certain tunes in battle that will help support the party or deal damage to enemies. However, you won't know what melody Ricardo will play until you've tried it out, and if it's a support tune, it won't have any effect on Ricardo. After Ricardo finds his Muse Item, check out the shiny object on the floor to receive a Key to Room 422. Leave the hotel room. Outside in the hallway, Mao will notice the atmosphere of the hotel is similiar to Alcatraz, after they broke Al Capone out. The party will then be ambushed by several monsters. Defeat all of them. Once all the enemies are gone, head up, and enter the upper left room (Room 823). You'll come upon a group of gangsters, defeat them. Head foward, and examine the shiny object on the floor for a Key to Room 807. Leave, and head down. Go left, and examine Room 812 and enter. There are no gangsters, but there is a hotel employee. Talk to him to play a Lottery game. LOTTERY MEMBER NO. 8 Ring Type: Reverse Prize: Red -- Step Doubler Yellow -- Feather Bracelet Blue -- Talisman of Mercy Green -- Pure Seed White -- Tissues Take the Step Doubler, and leave. Head left, past the elevator, and examine the lower rooms of this floor. A "?" should appear over Johnny's head at Room 807, enter it. Head down, and there'll be a chest not far from the bed. Open it for a Petrify 1. Afterwards, leave the room and head for the elevator. Pick the fourth floor. At the fourth floor, head right. Someone will speak to Johnny, and several gangsters will ambush the party. Defeat all of them, and continue right. At Room 412 and Room 414, head south. There's a chest near a numbered sign, open it for a Pure Seed. Continue right, but don't head up yet. Hug the bottom of the hallway until you see a "?" over Johnny's head at Room 418. Enter it, and head down. Examine the lamp table until a "?" appears, have Johnny inspect it and find an Air Edge Stellar. Leave the room, and continue right. At the intersection, go up. Check the lower left door (Room 421) to see a "?" appear. Examine it and enter. Turns out Johnny and Mao have walked into a room full of gangsters...defeat all of them. Once the enemies are gone, head left and check out the potted plant in the corner for an Angel Souffle. Leave the room, and check out the door right across the one Johnny was in (Room 422). When prompted, enter the room. There are no enemies to fight, but head deeper in and open the chest near the bed. It contains a Key to Room 903. Leave the room, and go back to the elevator. Take the 9th floor. At the 9th floor, go down, and left. Examine the first door you see and enter. Johnny surprises a gangster who, in turn, will attack Johnny. Defeat all the enemies. Afterwards, check out the desk to find a Key to Room 4??. Return to the elevator and go back to the 4th floor. At the fourth floor, head left, past the guest and examine Room 406, the door behind the guest. Examine it, and enter when prompted. Check the chest near the window to pick up a Rock Burst Stellar. Leave the room, and go back to the elevator. Head back for the 9th floor. Back at the 9th floor, head down and right. Examine the bottom right door (Room 903) and enter when prompted. Ricardo and Johnny will be confronted by several gangsters; defeat everyone. At this point, Al Capone and his men will storm the hotel. After the gangsters have been defeated, open the chest near the armchair. It holds a Key to Room 1004. Leave the hotel room. At this point, I'd suggest heading down to the first floor and buy at least three Silver Bracelets (four, if you sold the one from the Grand Canyon) from Gerard. Stock up on Mana and Pure items, too. Also, consider upgrading those Stellar Charts, if you can afford it. Go back to the elevator, and pick the 10th floor. At the 10th floor, there's a Save Point available. Head down and left and open the chest for a Thera Root. Near the Save Point is Room 1004, examine it and open when prompted. Check the potted plant for an Arc Barrier Stellar. Equip it on somebody's Stellar Chart, and leave. Head right to be confronted by the last group of gangsters. Defeat everyone. Before heading for the penthouse suite, equip everyone in your active party with Silver Bracelets. Save your game, and continue on. Things get crazy in the penthouse suite when Al Capone and his men show up, but things turn for the worse when Edna shows up. McManus can't believe Edna is alive considering what he's done to her. Shania immediately figures out Edna's been tainted with Malice, but notices that Killer and Lady are outside, watching the activities. Johnny tries to get Ricardo away from Edna, and both guys are knocked down as Edna summons another Window. BOSS: Malice Edna Class: Water HP: 1670 MP: 404 KCal: -10 EXP: 4000 Cash: 4900 Soul: 90 Drop: Bison Statue Warlock Earrings Bonuses: +980 Cash (Enemy Action No.: 1 turn) Stone Belt (Max No. of Chained Hits: 76) Strategy: Have someone physically Hard Hit/cast Red Nova on Edna to reduce her Stock Gauge. (Alternately, if you've visited New York recently, have Johnny use his Vacuum to suck away Edna's Stock.) If you've equipped everyone with Silver Bracelets, you shouldn't have to worry about Edna's Mental Break spell. Her Black Hole ability, on the other hand, will deal about 70-80 damage (even 100 if Frank's caught up in the spell) to about two or three people, so have someone Arc Cure everyone every few turns. Because Edna is Water-type, Ricardo is perfect for dealing the most damage. Have someone cast Surge on Ricardo, and have Ricardo use Hot Blood (Serenata --> Fade-fast Flower --> Melody: Rage) every chance you get. Try and fit in a combo with everyone, if you can. Make sure that the last person has enough Stock and MP to cast the Tempest Combo Magic (pick the last option if you see "????", and only if Johnny's participating in the battle), or have someone cast Red Nova at the end of the combo to deplete Edna's Stock. Don't forget to restore MP and SP as well. After the battle, Edna and Ricardo will spend their last moments together... At Chichen Itza, Professor Gilbert appears to have been waiting for Killer and Lady. He suggests to Killer a very radical theory on what it is that Lady is trying to accomplish. Back in Las Vegas, the whole party pay their respects to Edna at the ruined penthouse suite. Ricardo swears to avenge her death, and the whole party leaves Las Vegas to give Al some private time. At the World Map, Chichen Itza will finally be accessible. Go there now. GOING OFF
