Stolen Kiss

Yeah, people say Riku was attracted to Kairi. And Tidus, Wakka, and Selphie seemed to hint she’d have been better off with him. Now, listen to the whole story.

About a month before Destiny Islands disappeared the first time, Sora’s first dreams occurred while he was sick in bed. This made him miss a home room field trip to the zoo. The thing was, the night before, Kairi and Riku had been on the phone. And Kairi had finally told him that she liked him. As more then a friend. He felt the same. So the zoo was sort of an unofficial date. It all started the next morning.

“Kairi!”

The sun shone down on Kairi’s crimson hair as she turned to her brunette friend, Selphie.

“Hey Selphie.” Kairi said with a smile as she stuffed her wallet in her purple skirt pocket, ducking under both belts, pulling out her white tank top from the waist line.

“So we sitting together on the bus?” Selphie asked as she wrapped her jump rope around her yellow sun dress pocket.

“Well...uh..kind already planned.” Kairi laughed nervously. Her friend just stared.

“Oh my god. You and Riku...” She started. Kairi sighed.

“I told him last night, over the phone. He likes me back!” She said. Selphie squealed and hugged her friend.

“I am so happy for you!” She exclaimed as Kairi smiled.

“I’ve never been happier myself...” She said, “You don’t mind that I don’t sit next to you?”

“Not at all! I’ll just yell at Tidus and Wakka so I can sit between them.” Selphie said as another voice entered.

“Kairi!” Kairi turned as the silver haired Riku ran over, his wooden sword strapped to the back of his yellow shirt with the black x on the top, just reaching his blue pants. Kairi couldn’t help but feel her heart flutter at the site of his stormy eyes meeting her azure eyes.

“Hey Riku.” She said as Selphie walked ahead on the bus.

“Ready to go?” He asked as Kairi nodded.

“You bet!” She said as she walked onto the bus, heading towards the back. Riku walked beside her, their hands entwined.

Kairi couldn’t remember a happier day in her life. They had talked on and on for the entire bus ride-simply talking, or listening to each others music. Which was fine with Kairi, she wanted to take this slowly. So they got off, and as it was a small zoo, they were simply told to meet at three by the entrance. Riku and Kairi had been exploring happily-the reptile house, the mammal wing-and they were in the Predator Cat area. That’s when it started.

Apparently, the fence was really rusted, as a lion was now sitting on the path in front of them. Kairi, mostly in shock, not horror, let out a scream as she backed up. This attracted sed lion’s attention, and it lunged towards her. Kairi, finding her legs unable to move, brought her arms up, shutting her eyes and turning to the side. But the blow never came-she opened one eye, and gasped.

Riku was holding the lion’s paw back with the wooden sword he had.

“Kairi-move! I can’t hold it for long!” He yelled. Kairi nodded, making her legs move again and darting to the side. Riku dodged and rolled under it as it leapt over him and grabbed her wrist.

“Well come on-its going to realize we move soon! And I don’t want to be here when it turns around!” He yelled. Kairi nod and ran along side him.

The day continued pretty uneventfully, after the lion was caught again. Kairi had thanked Riku several times as they climbed on the bus, but still felt something was missing. They were simply staring over the seats, where Wakka, Selphie, and Tidus-the entirety of their home room, and only other people on the trip-were watching Sleeping Beauty on a portable DVD player-neither Kairi nor Riku knew that their life was about to become entangled around the bad guy. Kairi then got an idea to give Riku a token of her appreciation-a quick kiss on the cheek. What she wasn’t expecting was for Riku to have been waiting for something like this and turning his own head so she missed his cheek-but not his lips.

Kairi felt everything shatter. Her first kiss was a set up-nothing like she’d EVER imagined it. And the trust Riku had made so firm by saving her-shattered. The Riku she thought she knew-was only who she knew as a friend, and if anymore would change. She hadn’t even had time to close her eyes as the horror set in.

Kairi could have forgiven it, if she thought it an accident. But he kept pressuring for a second kiss. So she became quite sure that not only had she not wanted that kiss-she had no intention of moving so fast! She remained quiet for the rest of the ride back to the school, and lied to Riku when he asked about walking her home-said she was sleeping over at Selphie’s.

Selphie seemed surprised to see Kairi, but then saw her face and let her in.

“Okay, what happened?” She asked as Kairi sat down on the floor in her room.

“It-he-” Kairi broke into sobbing as Selphie handed her a glass of milk. A carton of milk and package of Oreo’s later, Kairi had recounted her story of woe.

“Oh my god...I am so sorry. I never thought Riku would do anything like that!” Selphie exclaimed as she pulled out the clothes Kairi had stored at her place for emergencies such as this. Kairi sighed.

“Neither did I. Neither did I.” She said, taking up a pair of Pajamas and walking over to the bathroom to change.

“Selphie, it alright if I call my mom to tell her where I am?” Kairi asked after changing.

“Go ahead.” Selphie said as she set up the spare sleeping bag. Kairi nodded and ran over to the phone, calling her house.

“Kairi?”

“Hey mom...sorry. Was sort of exhausted, so I had to sack out at Selphie’s...yeah, I have clothing here. See you when I get home tomorrow. Good night!”

The next morning Kairi walked to school, avoiding the bus. Or, to be exact, avoiding Riku. Selphie walked with her, giving her a distraction so she could get to home room. About now the teacher requested if anyone wanted to take Sora his homework for the next three days and yesterday-four days work in total. He lives near me, I can drop it off on the way home and have an excuse...not to talk to Riku... So, Kairi volunteered before anyone else got in.

“Kairi!” Kairi turned hesitantly, holding the spare backpack and her own, as Riku ran up.

“So...you care to hang out on the Islands today? I’ll show you Sora and my’s secret spot.” He said. Kairi laughed nervously.

“I can’t. I have to take Sora his books, then Selphie said she’d help me study for the test tomorrow.” She lied about the last. That, and Sora already showed it to me. She thought.

“Well...see you tomorrow then?” Riku asked.

“Uh...yeah.” Kairi laughed nervously, glad he wasn’t in all of her classes and didn’t know if there would be a test or not.

Kairi calmed down slightly as she knocked, and the spiky haired Sora answered, blowing his nose-he had a cold.

“Bairi!” He exclaimed in happiness.

“Hey Sora.” Kairi said with a smile.

“What bar you doing beer?” Sora asked, Kairi translating to what was she doing there.

“Homework duty.” She says. Sora groaned.

“For all they bow I’m dying! And they send homework!” He exclaimed dramatically. Kairi laughed, and then blinked. It had been the first time she’d truly laughed since yesterday.

“Well, not much new in school...there was a lion loose in the zoo.” She said, handing him the backpack.

“Geeze-bid it eat anyone?” Sora exclaimed.

“Unfortunately, Tidus turned out to be faster then it.” Kairi said jokingly, not mentioning she’d nearly been eaten.

An hour passed and they had talked, and laughed. But since it was late autumn, the sun was lowering quickly.

“Geeze-I better get home. Be back with tomorrow’s load!” Kairi exclaimed, with a quick smile, and ran home.

Kairi was quite cheerful that night, humming as she washed up. She then blinked. What was different between today and yesterday? Kairi shrugged, though a little unsure how, and then tried to figure out school tomorrow-the bus was unavoidable. So that meant she’d collide with Riku on the bus ride...

....she was not expecting the next morning that Selphie was sort of...making sure Wakka and Tidus kept Riku busy. Other then that, the day followed yesterday’s routine. The next day at lunch was when Riku finally caught up with her.

“Kairi, you’ve been delivering Sora’s for the last two days, and studying...you can not have three days with tests in a row.” He said.

Kairi swallowed, very nervous. She knew he’d eventually catch on. But she’d been hoping not in middle of the cafeteria.

“Well...I’ve also been helping Sora with the lesson’s he’s missed.” She said honestly.

“Come on Kairi! Cut it off this time so we can go to the island! I mean, he’s your friend, I’m supposed to be your boyfriend!” Riku exclaimed. Kairi rose to her feet.

“He’s never tricked me into something I didn’t want to do!” She exclaimed.

“Excuse me?”

That kiss? I was so no ready for it-or any kiss on the lips-for a time to come! AND YOU SET ME UP!” Kairi yelled, not realizing she’d drawn her friend’s attention. She turned to walk away, and before Riku could do anything, Selphie was between them.

“Leave her alone boy. You blew you’re chance.” She said, walking off.

Somehow, a month passed, Sora never got wind the romance had ever been slightly there, Tidus never learned it had ended. Kairi and Riku weren’t what they’d briefly been, but they were still on very tense terms, though working together with Sora to build the raft.

They’d finished the rafter, Kairi was sitting with Sora on the dock at sunset. They been talking and she looked up.

“Riku’s changed....”

“Huh?” Sora asked as Kairi stood up.

“You’re the one whose changed, Kairi.” Kairi smiled at him, she’d made a decision. Over the last month of her recovery, she’d fallen in love with Sora. When they finished they’re raft journey and reached their destination, she was going to tell him.

“Sora?”

“M hm?”

“Don’t ever change.”

“I promise.”
