Prologue
"You have to fight, Zell!" Squall screamed. Zell shook his head.
"I'm not going to fight my girlfriend!" Zell yelled back.
"She ain't your girlfriend! She's the sorceress Gorld. Now get your ass out there and fight!" Squall grabbed him by the shirt. Zell broke free and ran off. "DAMN IT!"
Squall motioned for everyone else to move into battle. They strode in and started attacking. The sorceress took control and blasted them with Ultima. GF's appeared and when all seemed lost, Squall's Renzokuken pumped and grew bright red. He was about to perform his greatest attack: Lionheart.
He ran toward the sorceress with his gunblade and slashed at her over and over again. With every blast, the sorceress fell back. 9999 at every swing was enough to take Omega Weapon out!
The power was too intense for the sorceress. Gorld lifted high into the sky and screamed out in pain. With that last screech Gorld exploded, twitching at each blow. The explosion freed the girl she had possessed. The girl began to fall from about 100 feet in the air.
Zell foresaw this and turned around immediately from where he had run off to. He scurried toward the girl quickly, she was about 50 feet in the air, falling fast.
He screamed out to her as he got nearer. She was about 20 feet in the air and falling rapidly. The girl's head was spinning. What had happened? All she remembered was being in Zell's arms, then it were as if she being pulled away from him.
She had missed the ride to time compression and cried in her grief. She turned to corner and the sorceress got her. She was possessed since then. The furture was grim and lousy. She didn't know what was going on. All she knew was that she was imprisoned in her body and couldn't get out.
All she wanted was to be in Zell's arms again, and there she was falling from the sky. She prepared for the impact of the hard ground, but to her surprise someone caught her.
She looked up at her savior. Zell. In the corner of her eye a tear of joy gleamed and she hugged him. She didn't want to ever let go.
The next thing she knew, she was in the hospital staring up at two unidentified faces. She couldn't remember anything. Where was she? Who was she? What had happened? Who were these people?
"She's got amnesia," the doctor said. Rinoa shook her head sadly. Her little sister had just woken up from a coma and wouldn't even know her own name. "It's often a side effect of a coma."
"She won't know who any of us are. She'll have to start her life over at age 16. We have to help her. Tell everyone at Garden to treat her as if she's new. Everyone must pretend they don't know her even if they do, including us. If she finds out about this, I'm afraid it might all be too intense for her to take. She must find out by herself ," Rinoa said.
"Are you serious about this?" Squall asked. Rinoa nodded solemnly.
The story begins here
Chapter One
"Name?" Quistis asked, her deep blue eyes scanning the side of her hand, not daring to peek at this "newcomer". This was her job now. Ever since she had retired from being an Instructor, she had been the Instructor recruiter for Balamb Garden.
"Lina. Lina Heartilly," the girl in white replied. Quistis looked up from the neat papers she held in her hand. Her eyes fell upon the girl in front of her with curiousity and furtive contemplation.
"You're Rinoa's sister?" Quistis queried. Lina smiled sweetly, making her round brown eyes curve into a half circle.
"That would be me, yes," she responded and nodded curtly as a second reply as if it were necessary. Quistis stood up and shook her hand. "It's nice to finally meet you." Quistis's office was piled with documents continued even on the ground. Lina wondered what she actually did for a job; her sister, Rinoa, had never actually told her. Then again, Rinoa never actually knew herself. Quistis didn't like to tell people of her backtracking in rank.
"You too, I've heard so much about you," Lina said, recalling all that Rinoa was able to tell. Quistis smiled, she knew how Rinoa would talk about her. They were all good friends, even though they had had conflicts in the past. They had put aside their differences and worked things out.
"So what makes you think you can have the part for instructor here at Balamb Garden?" Quistis asked. There was a short pause where Quistis knew that Lina was preparing herself for the answer.
"I've been told that I was fit for Balamb Garden, I'm bossy," Lina giggled. "I feel like I need to build myself a future, and ...I don't have anywhere else to go," Lina nodded tentatively, her eyes expressed a solemnity that was sprinkled with emptiness. Quistis looked amused. She shuffled some papers and filed threw others. After a couple of minutes, she spoke.
"Alright... expert at duel, very qualified wow, SeeD rank level is 28. Oh, but you travel around a lot." Quistis stared at her expectantly. Lina stared right back. "Good, eye contact, needed in an instructor, trust me I know." Lina beamed cheerfully.
"I'll judge you as an instructor for a week. How's that?" Quistis said after a short pause of thought. Lina nodded. "But there'll be some SeeD members in your group of students because some applied to take more classes."
"No problem!" She laughed, mainly to herself, and walked out. The hallways in Balamb Garden were so intricate and confusing than her sister had told her that sometimes she felt she was walking around in circles. For some reason, her conscience guided her through the halls, never letting her lose herself in the confusion.
On her way out she straightened her dress and looked down to check it over. Sitting and waiting for Quistis's appointment with her and messed it up and she didn't want an appearance of a messy Instructor. "That certainly wouldn't be adequate for Quistis!" Rinoa would tell her. As she reached the turn at the hallway she bumped into someone accidentally.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" she cried and looked up at a pair of mysterious blue eyes. It was a man that she had bumped into. He had a tattoo on his face that looked like black fire. She thought she recognized him but wasn't quite sure. Her whole past was a mystery, but she tried not to make it seem like she was checking him out.
"It's cool, Lina," he muttered and walked away, his concentration totally thrown off. She stared at him and wondered how he knew her name, but he was already walking away. She at him with curious eyes as he placed a hand behind the back of his neck and sighed. Cute, she thought and turned at the corner of the hallway.
She headed for the main gate and looked around at the Garden while she trotted along silently. People with friendly smiles crowded the walkways. Some were jogging, some where playing cards and others were headed toward the library or the quad. When she reached the front gate she spotted her sister waiting for her patiently.
"How'd it go?" Rinoa asked excitedly as soon as she spotted her little sister heading for her. Trying to analysize her feelings wouldn't work because Lina always seemed like she barely had any emotions.
"Quistis said she'd watch me for a week to see how good I do," she explained simply. Rinoa screeched happily and jumped up in glee as if she had already gotten the job.
"Yay! Congratulations!" she screamed, trying to get her sister excited along with her, but Lina only smiled a little bit. Just as she did so a girl came around the corner and tapped Rinoa on the shoulder. She was a brunette and had very bouncy hair. Rinoa turned around.
"Selphie!" Rinoa screamed. "It's been such a long time!" They hugged as a greeting.
"Yeah I know! Oh, is this your sister?" Selphie said turning towards Lina, her brilliant green eyes waning with her smile. The tone of her voice seemed more monotonous than Lina had expected and her eyes appeared too familiar, too soft towards a strange, but maybe that was just how Selphie was like.
"Selphie, this is Lina, Lina this is Selphie," Rinoa introduced the two girls, rolling her eyes. They shook hands. Selphie was a hyper girl with a happy-go-lucky personality and a head full of clouds.
"Nice to meet you," Lina said politely. Selphie jumped up and down forgetting the whole formal introduction thing.
"You should come to our new school term ball. It's a tradition and it's loads of fun. It's oh, wait...it's tomorrow! Everyone in the Garden will be there! Even all the cute looking guys," she winked. Lina thought about the boy she had met this morning and sighed out a slight chuckle.
Lina smiled and moved on. She had always found her sister's boyfriend, Squall Leonhart, very attractive but she knew that Squall was out of bounds. She had never told her sister of her secret attraction to Squall for she was afraid Rinoa might get angry with her.
The sun shone brightly as she walked to exit the Garden. She was headed for the city of Balamb. She always enjoyed visiting Balamb and reading books next to the peaceful ocean. She thought that everyone there was friendly and nice.
When she was outside of campus she whistled a tune that was loud and eerie. A gust of wind blew and a giant bird landed next to her from out of the sky. It's golden feathers glistened in the afternoon sunshine.
"Good afternoon, Angel," Lina said to the giant creature. The bird leaned it's head down and crouched on the ground for Lina to climb on her back. Lina clutched Angel's silky gold feathers gently and hopped onto her back. "Balamb please."
They took off. Angel soared lightly and quickly through the sky. The wind brushed in Lina's face. Her two twisted strands of hair swished behind her ears. Lina was a sixteen year-old with black hair and coffee brown eyes. She had a few streaks for highlights. Her hair was tied back in a neat ponytail with two long curly bangs hanging in front. She was wearing a pink top, white skirt, and a long cape-like jacket that resembled much of Rinoa's. On the back of this cape was the design of a flower.
The flower had mysteriously appeared on the back of her cape a while ago. She wasn't able to remember how it got there or anything before that. From that day, all she remembered was waking up in the hospital with two unidentified faces lingering over her. They claimed to be her sister and her sister's boyfriend.
They soared in the air for some time, but soon they arrived at Balamb. Lina got off Angel and told her she could leave. Angel flew off while Lina entered the city. She walked towards the harbor, but on her way she saw the boy she had ran into in the morning.
"Yeah Ma , I'll see ya later!" he called out to someone as he headed for the exit of town. He stared at Lina for a moment then looked down at the ground quickly as if he had something to hide. Lina was going to read by the ocean again like she did every once in a while against her sister's wishes, but today she decided to follow him. She wanted to find out where he was headed, and maybe she might even strike up some light conversation.
He walked on the road by himself. Lina followed closely but she tried not to be noticed for she didn't want him thinking that she was some kind of stalker.
A Bite Bug came across the road and started biting at his arm. In reaction to this he grabbed it by the (what looked to be) throat and tossed it out far away, rubbing his arm. Lina smiled, his facial expression reminded her of Squall, frowning.
He cut off the road and into the small forest. Lina strived to keep up with him, but her cape kept getting caught on the branches.
As Lina unhooked her cape from a branch she encountered a T-Rexaur. Lina let out a squeal from surprise. Her squeal attracted the attention of the boy she was following.
Chapter Two
He unhooked her from the branch, led her to safety, and then fought off the T-Rexaur. It looked as if it were just a toddler T-Rexaur, but still it was a threat. It growled and slashed at him, but he resisted. Lina ran out of the forest and waited for the boy to emerge.
When he returned Lina said, "Thank you so much for helping me out back there, but it really wasn't necessary. I can handle that creature, but it took me by surprise."
"Don't worry about it," the boy replied idly, but he wasn't really looking at her, he was busy tending to a cut he gotten on his arm from battling the T-Rexaur. He walked away after waving a short goodbye. He headed toward Balamb Garden.
So, he's a student there well that would figure. I saw him this morning. She rolled her eyes at her own stupidity and walked into the Garden quietly, still a little astounded at how the day had started off. First, she found out that she would be judged as an instructor, then she met Selphie, then she went to Balamb to read, but found herself following the mysterious boy from the morning, and now she was watching him walk back into Garden.
Lina met up with Selphie at the front gate. They chatted and walked toward the Quad. Selphie showed Lina all of the equipment and instruments that would be used in the ball the next day, stuffed in a small cabinet. Lina smiled and told Selphie that she was a very devoted student. Selphie blushed and lugged the equipment to the other side of the cabinet.
Lina walked off and headed towards the library. She saw Seifer at the entrance to the library. She recognized Seifer because he used to be Rinoa's "boyfriend." Now he was alone and depressed. He stared at Lina with his peircing green eyes and ran and hand through his short blond hair.
"Hello," she said as she neared him, trying to strike up some conversation and feeling uneasy at the way he was staring at her.
"Yeah...hi," he replied dully. She shrugged and tried to carry on the awkward conversation.
"Uh...What are you doing here?" she asked. He shrugged a little and turned his head to the side coolly as to avoid having to look at her.
"Standing, breathing, and looking around," he responded boringly. Lina rolled her eyes and walked casually into the library. In the library she found large amounts of books and magazines. She looked at a few and passed by some others. Lina really enjoyed reading because it was her way of escaping the torments of reality for a while.
A girl came up to her and tapped her on the shoulder. This girl had brown hair pulled to the side to form one pigtail; only one. She seemed nervous and fidgety.
"Excuse me, but I saw you walk in with Zell. Are you his new girlfriend or something?" she queried. The name Zell streaked out in her memory like a shooting star.
"Who is Zell? And who are you?" Lina asked curiously, suddenly standing up alert.
"My name is Sally, and Zell is the boy with the tattoo on his face," Sally said.
"Oh, hi Sally. I'm Lina Heartilly and no I'm not his girlfriend, are you?" Lina asked again.
"I am, so back off Lina!" she screamed. Everyone in the library heard her. Lina turned her head coolly and walked swiftly out of the library. Zell was standing at the entrance looking confused.
Lina shyly glanced at him and ran off quickly. She headed towards Quistis's office, but on her way to the elevator she met Squall. He stared at her and asked what she was doing here. Lina said that she was applying to be an instructor. Squall just blinked and said good luck. Lina's heart beat fast as he left. She had never found anyone more attractive than Squall, but she sighed at the fact that he would never love her, also at the fact that he seemed like a loner.
She walked to Quistis's office and knocked on the door.
"Come in, door's open," she heard Quistis's voice on the other side. Lina entered. The office was slightly neater than it was the first time Lina had entered.
"I was wondering if I could find out my dorm number now," Lina questioned timidly. Quistis sat up immediately in slight surprise.
"Oh, yeah I almost forgot, sorry," Quistis blushed. It was first time Lina had ever seen someone of such high standards make a mistake and blush. Quistis handed her a piece of paper with the number 21 on it as well as a map.
"Thanks," Lina said as she left the room. Finally, she could now go into her dorm room and settle down. She knew she'd be here for a while.
Chapter Three
It was the night of the ball. Every student and instructor was there. Everyone was dressed up and looked very formal. Lina's sister, Rinoa was wearing a beige dress. Lina was wearing her short white dress with her hair put down. Lina never remembered anything in her past about going to a ball such as this but the songs, the atmosphere, everything seemed so strangely recognizable.
Lina had her eyes fixed Squall. He was standing at the entrance looking around dully. Lina admired the way he could be so calm at such a wonderful festivity. It made him look handsome and serene.
Lina couldn't have been more distracted at the time. When the music began to play she saw Rinoa walk up to Squall, making Lina very jealous and distraught. Lina wanted to figure out a way to get on the dance floor too!
Lina looked around. The first person she saw was Zell at the snack table talking to Sally. Lina grabbed Zell's arm without thinking and pulled him onto the dance floor. Zell looked extremely confused at the moment.
She pulled him into dancing, but she kept looking over his shoulder to check up on Rinoa and Squall. Zell looked at her timidly. He smiled; he thought she was a funny type of person.
Lina suddenly snapped back into reality and looked straight into Zell's blue eyes. She blushed and mouthed out sorry. How could she have been so naive? She had no clue what she was doing at that moment. All she cared about was watching over Squall and Rinoa was the time. Zell nodded knowingly and led her into a spin in the waltz. Lina thought that all of this seemed kind of familiar. She enjoyed it, but she knew Sally wouldn't be too happy with it.
While this happened, Sally stared from her spot next to the snack table. Fury boiled inside of her and she felt like slapping Lina. Her heart raced and she promised herself that she would not let Lina get away with it so easily.
It seemed like the song never ended. They danced all night and had a great time. Sally sat at the side and watched the entire thing. Jealousy and rage flushed inside of her. She needed revenge. She'd been beaten too the top too many times already and this time, she wasn't letting go. No, she'd find some way to get back at Lina, no matter what happened.
When Rinoa left to talk to Headmaster Cid, Lina left too, for she felt that she had danced with Zell for far too long. She smiled at Zell as a thank you, but she was still embarrassed for being so stupid; even after Sally yelled at her. She had to be more careful now. Zell nodded and walked towards Sally. Sally shook her head and looked angrily at Zell.
"What was that all about?" Sally yelled at him. "You two danced for over an hour!"
"Yeah, and my feet are killing me!" Zell sighed. "She just needed to go onto the dance floor to check up on Rinoa and Squall! Honestly!" Sally glared at him and stamped away, angrily.
Zell rolled his eyes and murmured to himself, "She's got temper problems." He shrugged and went back to the snack table.
Lina went back to her dorm after listening to Rinoa talk to Headmaster Cid. She lied down on her bed and slept an uneasy sleep. She had a strange dream about falling from the sky. She kept falling and falling, a familiar soreness ran throughout her bones and paralyzed her. A dot below her was running under her. As she reached the ground the mysterious dot became visible. It was a man. She recognized his face. His face was almost visible when she woke up.
Sweat covered her face and she gasped for air, she couldn't remember anything about the dream she just had. She rolled over and glanced at her clock. It said 5 o'clock. She sighed and laid back down to slept.
Chapter Four
At 7 a.m. Lina's alarm clock sounded, loud and clear; the whole school might have heard it, but maybe that was just because it seemed so protruding after a peaceful night. She slapped it shut and twirled back around to sleep.
There was a loud banging at her door. She got up unwillingly to answer it, but when she opened the door, no one was there. She glanced to her right and saw the door of room 7 slam shut. Lina shrugged and sighed, Well, I'm awake. She suddenly remembered that today was the first day that she would be judged to be an instructor. She couldn't be late and the person in room 7 knew that too.
Lina got up and changed into her instructor uniform. She left the dorms and paused to see if anyone would come out of room 7. No one did. Weird, Lina thought, but changed the direction of her thoughts onto the day's plans.
Lina went to the classroom early and set up. She was already half an hour early, but she wanted to be sure that she would make a good impression. 15 minutes after Lina set up, Quistis arrived and sat in the back of the room.
"You ready?" Quistis asked her. Lina nodded. The bell rang and the class entered. Lina took a look around at the students faces. She noticed that Seifer was in her class, so was Zell.
"Ok, listen up. I may be younger than you, but I'm probably a hell lot smarter than you," Lina said. That got the class's attention. Quistis smirked; she remembered doing something similar when she became an instructor. "You mess with me and there'll be consequences." Lina stared deliberately at Seifer. Seifer shrugged and stared dreamily out the window.
"Alright, take out your books," Lina instructed. The class went by pretty much the same. If someone disobeyed, Lina jumped on them, but she also tried to be nice and interesting. At the end of class the bell rang and everyone packed up, eager to get out of class. She caught them at the door.
"Tonight look up information on Sorceress Ultimecia," Lina called out to the class. Everyone groaned except for Zell who knew everything there is to know about Ultimecia. He had once battled her. Lina didn't know that though, if she did, she might not even be an instructor.
"How'd I do?" Lina asked Quistis when all the students were out. Quistis smiled and patted Lina on the back.
"Good, very good," she said. They walked out the door together and headed for the main gate. On their way out, Lina spotted Sally and Zell together at the entrance of the library. Sally was holding his arm and Zell was looking the other direction. Lina smirked at the sight. Sally was angry and that made Lina happy.
Lina didn't know why seeing Sally angry or disappointed made her happy, she just knew that Sally deserved it for yelling at Lina in front of everyone.
Quistis and Lina walked down to the front gate and met up with Rinoa and Squall. Rinoa and Squall discussed something for a minute, then Squall left. Lina gave Rinoa a questionable look.
"He's gone to round up the gang for their minor mission," Rinoa explained. Lina nodded her head in understanding and they waited patiently. Soon enough, Squall arrived with four other people. They came into view.
Squall was followed by Irvine Kinneas, Selphie Tilmitt, Zell Dincht, and Quistis Trepe.
"Lina, I believe you know Selphie, Zell, and Quistis," Squall said. Lina nodded and felt her face go red despite the fact that she was trying to control it. Squall was actually speaking to her.
"Ahem," Irvine poked Squall in the back shyly. "Aren't you going to introduce me?"
"Oh, yeah Lina this is Irvine Kinneas: One of the best actors and yet the most perverted man in the entire universe," Squall introduced. Irvine pushed Squall out of the way and shook Lina's hand intently.
"Very nice to meet you, Lina, the pleasure's all mine," Irvine said, bending down to kiss her hand. Selphie raced up and hit him over the head. Irvine's recoil was quick and he fell to the ground harshly.
"Don't mind him, he just doesn't know what's good for him!" Selphie exclaimed while pulling hard on Irvine's ear. Irvine's eyes might have popped right out of his head if he hadn't any eyelids because they grew wide and irritable as Selphie's hand gave a jerk.
"Owwie!! That hurts!" Irvine sobbed. Lina laughed cheerfully. She found it strangely familiar.
"Ok everyone, go change out of your SeeD uniforms. We need to dress comfortably because we'll be traveling to Galbadia Garden. They've stationed themselves somewhere in the Centra continent and we'll need to go to the Ragnarok to get to them. We are to deliver this message," Squall said holding up a neatly folded letter.
Everyone headed towards the dorms and changed into comfortable clothes. Lina wore her usual white outfit. When the group headed out Sally appeared behind them.
"What are you doing here? This is for SeeDs only. You should be in class," Quistis said to her.
"Just came to check up on my boyfriend," she said glaring at Lina.
"You do that, princess," Lina muttered at her sarcastically and raised an eyebrow. The others waited for Sally to hurry up with her business. When she was done checking up on Zell and making him very irritated she turned to go back, but she didn't leave.
They all headed out, but just as Lina turned, Sally ran up to her and tripped her. Everyone looked at her, scared. They knew something was coming.
Lina got up slowly and looked menacingly at Sally. Sally just smirked and grabbed Zell's arm. Lina was furious! She started to glow white. She approached Sally bit by bit, a smirk on her face. Sally took out her dueling gloves and put them on.
Chapter Five
Everyone else backed away. Lina grabbed Sally by her shirt and tossed her. Sally endured the harsh blow and fought back with weak punches. Lina dodged them all and kicked her in the stomach. Sally leaned back in pain.
The girls were fighting furiously while Selphie and Rinoa went off to retrieve the Ragnarok.
Blow after blow, the two girls fought. After a while Selphie and Rinoa had returned with the Ragnarok. The battle was almost finished. One last kick and Sally was on the ground gasping for air. Lina stood triumphant.
Lina was now back to normal. The white glow that had surrounded her was gone, but she didn't even notice it was there. Her shirt was suspiciously white and clean.
"What are you guys all staring at? Let's go!" Lina exclaimed, smiling. Sally lied on the ground glaring at Zell for sympathy, but Zell wasn't even looking at her. He was staring at Lina with a smile on his face. Sally sat there dumbfounded. She went through all that trouble to skip her classes for that?
They boarded the Ragnarok and flew towards the Centra continent. When they got near Galbadia Garden, Rinoa and Squall jumped off the deliver the papers while the rest stayed in the ship.
Lina sat next to the window. She hated being alone. She didn't have anything to do, she didn't even have memories to revisit. Her whole life was a blur and she wished she knew more about herself.
Selphie and Irvine were in the pilot's seat looking over all of the controls on the panel. Quistis stood at the corner of the Ragnarok, her head slightly tilted, thinking about the current events taking place. Zell was at the other corner of the Ragnarok keeping a lookout for Rinoa and Squall.
Irvine glanced in Lina's direction and waltzed over coolly. Lina's back was facing him, so she didn't notice him until he said, "Hey." Lina's elbow went back immediately and accidently hit him in the stomach. She turned around and apologized.
"I'm so sorry! It's a reflex," she cried. Irvine nodded, twitching.
"I-it's all good," he stuttered, but fell over on the floor of the Ragnarok. Lina stood over him looking worried. This attracted the attention of Zell, Quistis, and Selphie.
"Kinneas, stop being stupid," Zell smirked and sighed, but avoided looking at Lina. Quistis and Selphie uttered similar remarks; apparently, they were all used to the "Natural Irvine Routine".
"Irvine, stop playing dead," Quistis barked. "Don't worry, Lina, he does this all the time...It's just to get attention...mainly Selphie's attention. Selphie, please cure him." Selphie ran to him and placed a kiss on his lips. Suddenly, Irvine was up and about, jumping around happily; he was almost as hyper as Selhpie!
After about ten minutes or so Rinoa and Squall returned, glancing around happily.
"A success!" Rinoa exclaimed. "Our mission went well. Martine took the papers and signed them quickly! I thought it was going to take a lot longer." Squall agreed.
When they arrived back at Balamb Garden it was almost evening. Zell headed for the training center, Quistis headed for her office to check over some papers, Irvine walked to the dorm rooms to flirt with all the girls, Selphie followed him of course, Rinoa and Squall went to balcony to enjoy the sunset, and Lina went to the library.
Lina wanted to check out a book. She browsed around the library a couple of times, but didn't find what she was looking for. When she kneeled down to examine a few books on the bottom shelf, Sally slipped around to the other side of the shelf.
Without even knowing what happened, Lina found herself under a pile of heavy books. She climbed out to see everyone in the library staring at her. Sally stood in front of her, hands on her hips, smirking.
Lina finally realized that she was still sitting and attempted to get up. She tripped and fell over the books. She looked down at a pair of feet. Then someone put their hand in front of her face and offered to help her up. Gratefully, she placed her hand in the other and pulled herself up.
She looked up at whose hand it was. It was Zell. She smiled at him and at the coincidence, but flushed red when she suddenly remembered that she had beat up his girlfriend.
"You've seen me fall three times now haven't you? Once in the hallway, once outside, and now in the library," Lina said, embarrassed and mad with herself all at once.
"I've seen you fall more than that..." Zell started, but then stopped suddenly. Lina frowned at him, half wondering why he had stopped the sentence he started, half anxious to hear the rest.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Lina asked curiously. Was it possible that this Zell Dincht knew more about her than she did?
"Nothing... forget I ever said that," Zell said immediately. Lina stared at him suspiciously, but nodded obediantly. It had never been like Lina to disobey orders and she never knew why whether it was by instinct or just by the fact that she was a quiet girl and never cared for arguments.
"Well, thanks, but I better go now," Lina said staring at the clock on the wall anxiously. Zell waved goodbye.
Chapter Six
The next morning was the same, though Lina had no strange dreams when she slept. She woke up early and got ready for class. She had to prove to Quistis that she could handle the class like an official instructor.
The class seemed to be less interested than the day before. Lina tried to get their attention.
"Ok, what'd you guys find on Ultimecia?" Lina asked the class. No one raised their hands. "Well, I guess I'll just have to pick someone, Gerni! What'd you learn?"
A scrawny boy that sat in the back of the room replied, "Uh I learned that you can break your computer by pounding on the keys too much." The class giggled.
"Two laps around the Garden, GO!" Lina pointed her finger and him and sent him outside. Suddenly, the class sat up alert and ready. Lina smirked. "There we go... I see I've finally gotten your attention," she said cheerfully. "So, Seifer! What'd you find?" Lina waited patiently for him to reply. He didn't. "Go on, little Almasy, don't be shy," he said teasingly. Lina had picked on him when he was with Rinoa.
"She was a sorceress. She's from the future, SeeDs were sent to the future through time compression to defeat her. They won," he said dully. Lina tapped her foot on the floor softly.
"Could you at least pretended you cared?" she said patiently. Seifer sighed.
"She is a sorceress from the future that possesses sorceresses from our time in order to accomplish her goal. She wants to find a girl named Ellone and use her special power to go further into the past. There she will find another sorceress and blah blah blah...happy?" Seifer muttered mockingly.
Lina suddenly grew very impatient. "You're an asshole Seifer. You've always been an asshole...please go take three laps around the Garden."
"I don't want to," Seifer said lazily and he leaned back in his chair. His green eyes still sharp and scoffing.
"Don't make me force you out," Lina threatened. Seifer kicked his feet onto the desk.
"I'd like to see you try," Seifer spat. Lina grew very impatient. She was concentrating on Seifer so hard that she didn't notice her body glowing white. Seifer yawned and smirked at Lina. Suddenly he was lifted into the air and tossed out the open window. He landed in the Quad.
"RUN!" Lina yelled to him from the window. Seifer obeyed with a scared look on his face. Lina suddenly realized what she had just done. She stared at Quistis to see her face very shocked and pale.
Lina couldn't explain what had happened herself. She hoped Quistis wouldn't take away her position as instructor for that. She continued class quite ordinarily. The students were now very frightened of their instructor and followed her directions without debate.
At the end of class Lina waited for her analysis from Quistis. She was apprehensive of whether or not that one action would throw off her record so far.
"Very strict... I like it," Quistis smiled wryly. Lina was thoroughly relieved. She appeared relieved when she sighed and nodded too.
"What happened there? When Seifer was thrown out of the window...was that me?" Lina queried. Quistis frowned and looked up to the left as if there were something remotely interesting to be found in the classroom.
"It was probably just some weird thing that happened. I don't know, things like that happen around here," came Quistis's subtle reply. Lina let the subject rest after her remark. She had never been a person to push things and she did not demand a clear answer from the person who was judging her for her job.
Quistis and Lina met up with Rinoa, Selphie, and Irvine and they had lunch together in the cafeteria.
"The best things here are the hot dogs," explained Selphie. "But they are really hard to get because everyone wants them."
"After the first five minutes they re all gone. Remember the time you tried to get one, Lina? That was so funny! Then you got pushed into the dumps- Ow!" Irvine started, but Selphie punched him in the ribs. "What?!"
"You idiot!" Selphie yelled and pushed his head into his pudding bowl.
"What are you talking about? I've never been in here before," Lina questioned. Something fishy was going on and she wanted to know what it was because she was starting to feel like she was the only one kept out of it.
"My mistake, must have been someone else," Irvine said quickly with his head covered with chocolate pudding. He licked the most he could get of the pudding off his face before Selphie attakced him with napkins.
During the middle of their lunch Squall, Quistis, Zell, and Sally came along to join them.
"Hey guys!" Quistis greeted them happily. They took their seats with the others.
"Hi," they replied slightly monotonously.
"Whatever..." Squall said boringly. Lina grinned at him. He lifted his mouth in a slight smirk then went back to frowning. The only person who may have noticed Lina's smile at Squall was probably Zell. Not even Squall paid attention to her replying smile.
They sat down at the table together and ate lunch. Sally kept pushing at Zell's arm like he was extremely funny when in fact, he had done nothing at all to deserve half of what Sally was giving him. Lina found the irritated look on Zell's face amusing. She also thought it funny when he tried to cover it up with a forced smile.
Sally got up to get a drink.
"Do you like it when she does that?" Lina asked Zell, a little incredulous, but curious all together. Lina was so interested in the things around her these days. It was almost as if she could feel her past although she knew it had been lost so long ago.
"Does what?" Zell asked, stupidly.
"You know that pushy thing that she does. Like push your arm like that," Lina said. She gave an example by copying Sally. Sally had turned around and saw Lina's example, nothing more. Her jealousy and rage grew yet again, only accumulating to it's heights.
"You learn to live with it," Zell shrugged. Lina giggled as Zell rolled his eyes, landing them on Lina directly and not removing them for the rest of the time they enjoyed lunch with the entire group. Sally sat back down with her drink, eyes flashing in Lina's direction.
Chapter Seven
The next day wasn't exactly the best day ever for Lina. Lina welcomed the class when they walked into the classroom. The students seemed even more tired than usual.
"Guess what we get to learn about today?" Lina asked them excitedly, sarcasm creeping around the corners of her voice.
"What?" a person from the back of the room asked. The others could care less about what the subject for the day would be.
"Stuff that's harder than before!" Lina exclaimed, still sarcastic.
"What're ya gonna do? Give us another example? Throw me out the window again!?" Seifer yelled at Lina. The students around him raised an eyebrow towards him then stared towards Lina as if expecting her to say "yes".
"I don't know how you got out there but it certainly wasn't me," Lina denied the facts, trying not to let Quistis see her hesitation.
"Don't be a loser you know yourself what happened! Lina Heartilly, or should I say Sorceress Lina?!" Sefier fought back. A paperclip was thrown at Seifer's head in an instant. Lina looked to the side of the classroom and saw Quistis smirking triumphantly.
"Now where was I?" Lina muttered, mainly to herself. But Lina didn't finish talking because a phone rang inside the classroom. "We don't have a phone in here do we?"
Zell picked up a cell phone and quickly said into the phone, "Busy, later." And put it down. Quistis stared intently at Lina, expecting her to do something. Quistis wondered if she would have the heart to punish him, afterall she had seen events from the past which would counterattack it.
Lina felt Quistis's staring and knew she had to act fast. "Zell I'm afraid that I'll have to confiscate that cell phone of yours. Please put it here on my desk." Lina looked at him with eyes filled with guilt; a small reluctance gglimmered brightly. Zell knew that it was her obligation to do so and put it on her desk.
"Now, let's continue," Lina went on again. Class carried on for another half an hour. When the bell rang the class stormed out. Lina walked outside to the quad and sat down by the pond, looking onto the surface of the water which showed her reflection. Her face seemed so filled with melancholy, her eyes grey and dull at the time, her mouth showed no sign of joy, and her expression never changing at the sight, but this was how she recognized herself as. She had nothing to smile about and everything to frown about.
Lina really liked the pond in the quad. It was peaceful and serene and it let her have some time to herself. She felt the cool breeze pass through her hair. She also felt the presence of someone next to her. She turned around, but there was no one there. She sighed and shook her head a little: she was starting to imagine things to life.
Lina closed her eyes and felt the company of someone else yet again: the warmth of someone spreading his or her arms around her and holding her tight grew stronger and stronger. Her eyes opened and the feeling was gone suddenly. She missed it though. How nice it would have been for herself to feel love: The emotion everyone said was so beautiful and spledid.
Lina stood up to leave but felt a large force behind her. She fell forward, unable to control herself. Lina felt the cold waters of the pond flow around her. She was underwater and trying to get back up. When her head surfaced she looked upon the face of Sally, beaming.
Zell stood next to her looking down at Lina, worried. Lina shook her head and crawled out of the pond, soaking wet. Water even dripped from her eyelashes and her fingernails.
When she dried off and got back to the dorm she spotted Sally and Zell at the entrance of dorm room 7. Lina hid behind the pillar and watched for a moment. Sally smiled sweetly at Zell, but Zell was looking straight through her. Sally leaned in for a kiss. Zell entered his dorm 7 and closed the door on her face. Sally looked mad and stomped off.
Lina walked into her dorm and changed into her pajama pants and a tank top. It was already dark and Lina wanted to sleep early, hoping the attempt to rid herself of her misery would succeed.
Chapter Eight
At two o' clock in the morning there was a loud, irritating ring coming from Lina's chair. She sat up, annoyed and looked at what it was. It was Zell's cell phone. She just then realized that she still had it with her. It must have dropped out of her pocket when she changed. It was loud and extremely infuriating.
Lina looked in its direction, but she couldn't see clearly in the dark. She only only see the smalll glowing light it emitted as she tumbled out of bed and turned on the light. By then it had already stopped ringing. She checked the screen of the small device; it said, "One missed call press 'enter' to see who called." Lina pressed the little button labeled "enter". Sally had called. Now, Lina was even more furious than before: she had been rudely awoken because of Sally.
In her fury, she got out of bed and walked to room 7. She pounded on the door over and over. Lina heard a stumbling sound and something fall over. The door opened.
"I think your girlfriend wanted to tell you something!" Lina yelled and chucked the cell phone at his head. Zell ducked as if it were an instinct to do so. The commotion had aroused Selphie. She came out to see what was going on.
Selphie looked at them and clapped her hand over her mouth. Lina, previously blinded by rage, looked around at the scene. She was wearing a tank top and pajama pants, she was halfway in Zell's messy dorm, and Zell was wearing a T-shirt and boxers. Her eyes widened in fear and slight disgust of Selphie's immediate thought.
"NO! SELPHIE! What the hell!? Nothing happened!" Lina yelled. Many more people heard the noise and came out to see what had happened. Squall, Rinoa, Irvine, Sally, and a bunch of other people had crowded around to see what happened. A couple saw the scene and left immediately.
After one minute or so, the only people who remained were Squall, Rinoa, Irvine, and Sally.
"Woo hoo! What'd you two do tonight!?" Irvine hooted wildly.
Selphie slapped him over the head, Squall punched him in the stomach, and Rinoa kicked his shin. He leaned back in pain and fell to the ground. Lina took a step away from Zell. She was about to explain when she saw Sally staring too. This was her chance to get back at Sally.
"I'd like to know what happened!" Sally demanded. Lina smirked and took a step closer to Zell. She put her arm on his shoulder and beamed at Sally.
Sally stormed away pale faced and crying.
When Lina was sure she was gone she said," Nothing happened you guys, seriously. His phone woke me up in the middle of the night and I threw it at his head."
"But I ducked," Zell explained proudly. Lina nodded. Squall, Rinoa, Selphie, and Irvine left.
"Sorry about that Zell I had to get back at Sally though. She was driving me nuts. You understand," Lina said to him and patted him on the arm, already deciphering that Zell felt no love for Sally at all. She left and went back to sleep.
When Lina had gone, Zell said to himself," It's alright Lina just like old times." He turned and walked back into his dorm, tired from the day's events.
Chapter Nine
When Lina walked into class early the next day Quistis was already there waiting for her. She seemed more concerned than usual about the classroom issues.
"Lina, I just want to tell you not to listen to Seifer. I think he's a little crazy," Quistis lied. Lina giggled happily; she had had to deal with Seifer already and she knew of his kind.
"Oh, don't worry about him. I've dealt with him before. He's a real troublemaker, but I know how to deal with his kind of people. It's also logically impossible for me to be a sorceress; I ve never even seen one in real life before!" Lina smiled. Quistis shrugged and let out a small nervous chuckle.
The bell rang and the class walked in.
"Good morning, everyone," Lina greeted the class as she had been doing for the past couple of days.
"Good morning, Mrs. Heartilly," they replied.
"It's Ms. Heartilly," Lina stared at everyone sharply. She started the lesson off with a brief introduction to the sorceresses of the future. The class got very interested and couldn't wait to hear their assignment.
Before the class was over someone called out urgently, "What's our homework tonight?"
"Oh, I almost forgot! Tonight I want you to look up information on a sorceress from the future. Whoever gets the most interesting facts will be rewarded ten extra credit points," Lina explained. She looked at her lesson plans. "I want you to look up sorceress...hmm, well who do you guys want to do research on?"
Everyone raised their hands.
"Whoa... um...Hainc?" Lina called on the boy in the front row. He snorted a little and then answered.
"How about sorceress Ultimecia?" he asked excitedly. The class giggled at him because they had already been given the opportunity to research her.
"We've already done her, anyone else?" Lina said to the class. "Seifer?"
"What about you?" he asked coolly.
"Don't be stupid," Lina laughed. A few people in the classroom giggled. The others stayed silent, they agreed with Seifer. "If that's possible..."
"Anyone else?" Lina looked around. "Zell?"
"Sorceress Gorld?" Zell asked, his eyes narrowing. Lina flinched for a minute. She felt cold hands on her back digging deep into her body. She could feel the sensation of being controlled by someone else; being imprisoned in herself. She thought that she was being possessed. Lina took a quick nervous glance around suddenly. The class seemed to be frightened. Zell looked deep into her eyes and saw Lina's apprehensiveness. He saw Lina as Lina before the incident that had occured a while back.
"Um, sure," Lina replied quickly to make up for the pause in her speaking. The bell rang and the class pranced cheerfully out the door. Zell was hesitant to leave, but saw that Quistis would handle the situation this time. Rinoa was already giving him enough restrictions as it was and he stormed out angrily at the thought.
Lina sat down for a moment and put her head in her hands. She gasped for breathe as if her lungs had been torn out. She felt as if her hands were raising casting Ultima on her best friends.
You have to fight, Zell!
I'm not going to fight...!
She closed her eyes and saw Squall staring at her with a menacingly look
on his face. There had been a fight, she had been sent again her friends.
She felt a hand on her shoulder. Lina suddenly snapped back into reality as
the warmth from a single touch returned her.
"Are you alright, Lina?" it was Quistis looking down upon her with solemn eyes.
"Yeah I just, need some air," Lina said as she headed towards the door, trying
to escape conversation with Quistis about the Sorceress Zell had mentioned. On
her way out she saw Zell and Sally. Lina once again hid behind the pillar to listen
to them.
"What happened last night with you and Lina?" Sally demanded. Her cheeks were
red proving she had already imagined herself the worst possible.
"Nothing I swear!" Zell said honestly, but Sally didn't buy it.
"I know something happened! Just tell me!" Sally yelled, her voice starting
to crack.
"Damn it, Sally! I said nothing!" Zell argued. Sally grabbed his arm and he
threw her off immediately, not afraid to let the conversation become violent.
"Tell me! Zell Dincht you tell me now!" she screamed in his face.
"Argh! Damn it, Sally get the hell away from me! You're so damn annoying!"
Zell's face was red and angry. "I don't know why I even agreed to this in the
first place. You knew I hated you, but you just wouldn't leave me alone."
"Zell! I just want to know what happened! Zell! Don't walk away from me! Zell!"
Sally called, but it was too late, Zell was already at the turn in the hallway.
If Zell and Squall were put up to fight a sorceress named Gorld before...
Why didn't Zell want to? Lina wondered to herself.
And why do I keep getting images of Rinoa, Squall, Selphie, Irvine, and
Quistis being mad at me? We never got into an argument, She was still at it.
Her head was spinning with the questions left unanswered by her condition.
Chapter Ten
The day left Lina with a troubled sleep. She kept seeing Squall's face glaring at her. She didn't really care for Squall anymore. All of the time when she was fighting with Sally she had grown to admire Zell more. This transformation crept onto her so gradually that she didn't even notice it herself. He was cute, nice, and had a very generous attitude, even though sometimes he was a little too quick to speak.
When class began Lina said, "Well, did you find any interesting information on sorceress Gorld?" Lina got the sensation of being possessed again, but she fought it off. The room was quiet.
"No one? Wow, must be hard to gather information on this one," Lina said. "Ok, well I'll give you one more night." Lina had read books about sorceresses, asked Squall for information on Ultimecia, it just seemed that she had never heard about this... Sorceress Gorld.
"Before you carry on, Lina, I would like to announce that I have been very impressed with your performance this week. You are now an official instructor," Quistis said and clapped her hands for her.
The class cheered and whistled. Lina tried to hide her blushing by nodding and returning to her desk.
Lina carried on with teaching the class. When the bell rang everyone packed up and headed towards the door. Zell came up to Lina.
"Lina I was wondering... damnit this is weird. I was wondering if you'd like to go out or something tonight," Zell mumbled to her. Lina smiled slightly: she hadn't done so in so long that she seemed almost embarassed to.
"Don't you have a girlfriend, Zell?" Lina asked him, raising an eyebrow in suspicion.
"Well Sally's only my girlfriend because I...uh... had to hang out with her when Squall assigned it. I uh... lost my previous girlfriend... um...She was in an accident," Zell said timidly.
"Oh, I'm so sorry," Lina started, her smile fading immediately.
"Don't be," Zell said quickly and firmly. "I broke up with Sally. Will you please go out with me?" He went straight past the comments and went straight for the prize.
"Uh...Sure, why not?" Lina shrugged, hoping she would be able to hide her exultation better than Zell did. Zell jumped up happily and thought, Just like old times.
At night Lina prepared for her date. Wow, she thought. I'm seriously going to do this. Wonder what Sally would think, Lina grinned. At seven o' clock Zell knocked at her door. Lina came out and they walked out.
"So where're we going?" Lina asked.
"There's a restaurant in Balamb that s really good. The name of it is Nida's Corner," Zell said. He waited quietly for her reaction. Lina paused for a minute. She had heard that name somewhere before.
"Have I been there before?" she asked herself. She thought she was talking to herself, but apparently she had said it out loud.
"I don't know, have you?" Zell asked her.
"No, but that sounds so familiar. I don't know where it's from," Lina said.
"Maybe you have been there and you just don't remember," Zell smiled at her. Lina looked confused. They continued to walk to the city of Balamb. When they had reached the city the sun was setting.
The restaurant and dim and romantic. They sat at a table in the back of the room. The waiter came and took their orders.
He opened his mouth to speak, but what Lina heard was different from what he said.
Lina Heartilly and Zell Dincht. Squall Leonhart of Balamb Garden has requested you me to tell you that you are needed at Garden immediately and that a ride to time compression will be taking place soon.
"What did you say?" Lina asked him. He looked down at her, raising his brow.
"I said 'May I take your orders'," the waiter said, annoyed. They ordered and the waiter left looking exasperated. Lina scratched her head with a perplexed look on her face.
"Are you ok, Lina?" Zell questioned.
"Yeah...uh...did you hear the waiter just talk about time compression or something?" Lina queried. Zell shook his head but looked at her knowingly.
"If there are any problems, you can ask me... anything," Zell told her, reassuringly.
"Thanks I'm fine," Lina said trying to smile. They ate dinner together. Their night was full of laughter and joy. Lina had a great time with Zell. He made her feel normal; he made her feel like she had a past.
Chapter Eleven
In class the next morning Lina had planned on quizzing them on the sorceresses of the future when she remembered that they had an assignment due.
"Who's got interesting information on the sorceress Gorld?" Lina asked the class while fighting off the feeling that someone had pulled at her heart. Everyone raised their hands.
"Good, Vinni first, go ahead," Lina said pointing to the girl in the middle of the room.
"Ahem, well the in the information I have gathered says that Gorld was an ugly sorceress who couldn't use her strongest powers unless she possessed someone. That someone would then be stuck in their own body forever until a person freed him or her by defeating Gorld. Records show that the sorceress Gorld has possessed only three people in the past," Vinni finished.
"Who are those three people? Do you know, Vinni?" Lina asked her.
"The information I found on the internet does not say," Vinni replied.
"Very well, does anyone else have different information?" Lina asked the class. Seifer raised his hand. "Seifer?"
"What? Oh, I was just stretching. But, I was wondering, Teacher, wouldn't you know more about Gorld than anyone else here? You've met the freak, haven't you?" Seifer smirked, believeing he had won.
"Actually, no I haven't and I think you guys should find the information yourselves rather than having me giving you all the answers... that wouldn't exactly be learning... would it?," Lina answered and Seifer's smirk faded into an irritated frown. "Anyone else? Kati, what about you?"
The girl sitting next to Seifer flinched and shook her head furiously, "I don't think that my information is really necessary, instructor. I-I mean I didn't find anything good."
"Nonsense, please read out loud what information you gathered," Lina reported.
"B-but It's really nothing I d-didn't get anything good. Seriously," Kati stuttered. Seifer leaned over and looked at the papers she held in her hand. He stared at Lina in a sinister way and smirked. Other people came up to her to look at her papers.
A boy named Minch grabbed the papers up and said, "I'll tell you what it says! It says Sorceress Gorld is a very dangerous sorceress. She is now in isolation and will be released in one hundred years. She possessed three people in the time that she was free. They were named Jeni Merrite, Toni Wangai, and Lina Heartilly. These people now carry some type of sorceress's blood in their systems making them sorceresses as well. The sorceress possesses them by entering their bodies and taking control of them. After Gorld is done with one person and moves onto the next, the person will die. Instructor, how come you're in here and how come you're alive if it's true?"
"That can't be possible," Lina said, utterly confused herself. "I've never seen this sorceress before in my life."
"But you're right here in the paper!" Minch shouted, pointing at the paper in his hand as Kati burried her face in her hands to hide the redness.
"I...what?" Lina queried. Zell threw something at Minch's head.
"You know, that would explain all the funny stuff that's been happening in this class!" Minch yelled. Zell yet another paperclip, but Minch ducked. "Who are you really, anyways? Or... What are you?"
Lina looked down at her feet and murmured to herself," I-I...don't...know..."
"Well, what do you have to say about this, Instructor? You should know, shouldn't you?" Minch kept asking her.
"Will you be quiet for a moment? I m trying to think," Lina snapped at him. He didn't be quiet. Lina's head was already spinning and yet he kept asking.
"I just want to know all the answers, Instructor! Who were those other people do you know them? Did you guys get possessed together?" Minch went on.
"I was never possessed and I don't have sorceress powers!" Lina cried, starting to get angry. Her eyes started to fill with a white light and her body glowed white. Minch saw her transform color and shut up immediately.
Just in time, the bell rang and the class walked out quietly, staring at Lina for a moment on their way out. When everyone was almost out the door, Lina slid down onto her chair and put her head in her hands.
She once again felt the ice cold grasp at her heart. She felt imprisoned in her body. She closed her eyes and felt herself fighting one on one with Squall. Squall was using Lionheart. She could feel the blade cutting into her skin, deeper and deeper.
She felt someone's hand on her shoulder and it brought her back into reality once again. Zell stood over her smiling. "You alright, Lina?" Zell tried to cheer her up.
"I...it couldn't be true could it? I mean...I've never even seen what this sorceress looks like! I've never even studied about her," Lina muttered. "I don't know I'm just ... just thinking about stuff." Lina left the room. Zell stood there alone. He didn't know what was going through her mind, but he had a clue.
That night when Lina went to sleep she had the dream where she was falling again. Things seemed clearer this time. She could see the person on the ground and it wasn't as vague as before. When she came near the person she woke up and looked around. This dream had to mean something. It was recognizable, yet still indistinct.
Chapter Twelve
Lina was distressed in the morning. She had barely gotten a wink of sleep. She opened the door right at Zell's head when she exited the room. He fell over at the shock and looked puzzled.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" Lina cried. "Are you alright?" She helped him up and apologized, then raced off to the office.
"It's beginning," Zell said to himself and smiled. Of course, he knew what was going on, but Lina didn't.
*****
Lina rushed down to her classroom and logged onto her computer. She checked the internet for all sources on "Gorld". She was looking for something, something on herself. She seached for half an hour and she didn't find anything. Not a single trace! She pounded on the keyboard, annoyed.
"Damn it! Gimme the answers!" she screamed and miraculously the screen showed a website with a black background and red words. She skimmed over the words and scrolled down. Suddenly, she found her name in one of the many paragraphs and printed the entire website out.
She was just about to look it over when the bell rang and the class entered.
"Get out, all of you! No class today! Get out! OUT!" Lina yelled at them. Zell stayed inside as the other students left, confused and a little scared at their new instructor.
"What's that you got there?" Zell asked looking over her shoulder. "Wow, so you found my website?" Lina stared up at him, unbelieving. So, it was true, he did know more about her than she thought.
"Your website?" Lina queried, bewildered. "But how? You?" Before she could ask any more questions, Zell smiled and gave her a quick peck her on the cheek.
"Calm down," He said. Lina suddenly got a flashback. Everything seemed so familiar now.
"You've done that before. I know you have...but how? I don't even really know you!" Lina stared at him. He just smiled sweetly, a gleam in his eye. "What the hell's going on?"
She looked down at the papers she was holding. She saw many pictures. One including herself of what she looked like when she was possessed. "How? I...I don't understand!" Lina muttered to herself. She probably sounded really annoying right now, but she had to ask questions and talk to herself. You would if you just found out you weren't who you thought you were.
"That girl!" Lina pointed to the picture of the sorceress in Lina's body. "She looks just like me! How is that possible? I-I've never even seen Gorld before! This is so weird and yet...she looks so familiar."
"You alright about this?" Zell said stroking her hair gently. Zell may have seemed to be too close to Lina after only one date, but he was only trying to help her bring back her past to her present. Lina stood up.
"No...I'm not! I need to see Rinoa," Lina said running out the door.
"It's about time " Zell muttered to himself for Lina had already left the room.
Lina stormed the Garden searching for Rinoa. She approached Squall's dorm and kicked the door open. She saw Rinoa sitting at his desk, playing with her fingers boredly.
"What is this?!" Lina asked angrily and held the papers out for Rinoa to see. Rinoa looked up at the pictures Lina held in her hand. "This is Zell's website." Rinoa closed her eyes angrily and sighed deeply.
"Well I can't keep it from you forever. I might as well tell you now," Rinoa said and motioned for Lina to sit down in the chair next to the door.
Chapter Thirteen
"It's like this Lina," Rinoa started. "You know you are my sister. Well, when you were born they...lost you in hospital. Sorceress Gorld claimed to come from the future and well, throw you into a portal. We don't know what happened to you then.
"You had searched for me since then. You found me not too long ago and we became a small family. We were never close to Dad, he's different from us. You became Zell's girlfriend--oh you two were so cute-- but then we got sent on a mission for time compression. You didn't make it in time and were possessed by a sorceress named Gorld.
"She controlled you in your body. At that time you had already become a sorceress yourself and were stronger than her. She used your powers and channeled them toward the evil path. Then...we had to fight you.
"But, Zell refused. He didn't want to hurt you. He ran off to the side and watched the battle from a distance. Squall got his limitbreak: Lionheart and he used it against you. You couldn't take it, but you should know that... you've seen him use that attack. No one would be able to...the sorceress lifted your body into the air and exploded.
"The explosion dropped you out of sky you...as yourself. Out of no where, Zell came in and caught you right you were about to hit the ground. It was so romantic. You hugged him, but then passed out. In the infirmary the doctor informed us that you had amnesia. You were sent back through time compression and slept since then.
"I directed everyone not to tell you for I thought you wouldn't be able to take it. You were put to rest until we came back from the mission, successful. Zell was heartbroken to hear that you wouldn't remember anything and that he had to put up with it.
"At that very moment and girl named Sally or something popped in and asked if she could be his boyfriend. Zell refused at first, but I made him go with Sally so he wouldn't try helping you get your memory back. So, don't be disappointed if you think you've lost Zell because you haven't. He still loves you.
"Now that you ve heard the full tale of it what do you think?" Rinoa concluded. All of her words were quick and precise. Lina stared at her, astonished. The sentences and paragraphs seemed to glide through one ear then straight out the other.
After a moment of silence Lina yelled at Rinoa, "What the hell? How could you!? You didn't tell me at all? It doesn't even sound real! How could this be possible!?" Lina walked off. She opened the door quickly. Zell and Squall fell forward for they had been pressing their ears against the door the entire time.
Lina stared at them angrily and stamped off. She still didn't believe the story. It was just too far-fetched to accept as true. She just didn't fully remember who she was!
Chapter Fourteen
Lina went back to her classroom and logged on the computer again. She kept on reading the website Zell had put up. When Lina clicked the button to go to the next page the wall in front of her desk blew up. The blast forced Lina against the back of the classroom. Pieces of concrete flew around and piles of rocks were all over the desks.
Lina put her hand to her head to check if she was alright and slowly stood up.
"Lina Heartilly! There you are! I've come back and I need you! You're one of the strongest sorceresses in the world and I want your powers!" someone yelled.
Lina turned around and found herself facing a woman who floated was floating in the air. She was wearing a green dress that was badly torn. Half of her body was blue and black.
"Who are you?" Lina asked her, trembling, but then finally comprehended her words. "Wait did you say sorceress? I'm not a sorceress! Damn it!"
"I am Gorld! I have been freed. Now, bow down to me and let me enter your body," Gorld screamed at her. Lina ran out the door. "Fool! You can't escape me!" Gorld completely obliterated the wall with a simple flick of her hand.
Lina ran as fast as she could away from the lady who claimed she was the sorceress Gorld. She rushed towards the balcony, not stopping to look back at how far ahead she was.
"Now I've got you!" Gorld screamed happily. "Come, give into my power!"
"No!" Lina yelled and threw a big rock at her head. The rock had stunned the sorceress for a minute but it didn't help for long. Lina ran for the elevator. Gorld followed demolishing everything in her path.
Lina had almost reached the walkway of the elevator when the sorceress reached her hand out and grew bright green. The last step Lina had just taken exploded. It sent Lina flying out of the walkway.
Down below the walkway Zell was heading towards the library, when he heard the explosion he glanced upward. Shards of rock where thrown everywhere. He saw a glimpse of white being flung out of the explosion.
"Lina!" he shouted and ran to catch her. Lina was falling again and could see a person below her that looked like a dot. The dot was running towards her. What's going on? She thought, thoroughly tired of not remembering anything at all.
As Lina neared the ground Zell caught her in his arms. He stood her up. "What's going on, Lina?"
"Gorld back...after me...again," Lina gasped. So everything is true...how could it be? I still don't remember any of it! Wait, if I am a sorceress, that must mean that I have sorceress powers! Lina suddenly realized this.
She gave Zell a hug to reassure that she would be alright. "I have to face my past," she whispered in his ear and then took a step towards her enemy. Gorld appeared in front of her.
"Ready to give in, Lina?" Gorld questioned her mockingly.
"No, but I'm ready to fight," Lina answered. Gorld smirked, obviously amused at Lina. Lina stayed firm.
"This'll be interesting," Gorld said scoffing. Gorld approached her. Lina didn't know how she did it, but her outline began to glow white. She felt a surge of power flow through her body.
Gorld started to look worried. Lina beamed and moved forward. Gorld's hands began to glow bright green and she aimed straight at Lina. There was another blast. It caused smoke and dust to rise. Zell watched from a distance. Oh no! Where's Lina? Did it hit her?!
The smoke cleared slowly and the spot of the blast was empty. Gorld smiled went closer to search for Lina's body.
But, suddenly, Gorld was grabbed around the neck by surprise. Lina was behind her ready to attack. Lina twirled her around and threw her against the wall. Gorld cried out in pain.
Gorld flew back into action and kicked Lina off to the side. Lina landed in the corridor to the infirmary creating a hole in the wall. She got back up and continued to battle.
Lina slapped Gorld, Gorld slapped her back. It was a battle of strength, agility, and strategy. The battle raged on for almost half an hour. The two were getting tired.
The battle continued; all of Balamb Garden was watching them like a television show. At the end of an hour the two were exhausted, weak, and covered in blood. Gorld was thrown against the pillar. She looked around. There are pillars all over the place, she thought. She had an idea. Lina looked at her weakly, but fiercely.
Gorld pushed her against the pillar and aimed her hand towards it at the same time. The reaction to this was Lina hit the pillar and slid down just as it exploded and covered her in rocks.
Lina was unconscious and buried under hundreds of rocks. Gorld still needed Lina's body along with Lina's powers. She approached slowly, taking her time to recover her strength.
Zell ran quickly towards her. He removed many rocks, big and small.
"Lina!" he cried. He found her and tried to wake her up. "Lina...you haveta get up! Gorld's comin ! Come on! Wake up!" The luminous white light surrounding her became more faint. Zell put his arms around her.
"Come on! Please! Wake up!" Zell shouted. Those watching from afar could have sworn they saw a trail of tears appear out of his eyes. The white light on Lina's outline grew stronger, but it moved. It transferred itself from Lina to Zell.
Zell felt a strange force flow through his veins and he stood up to fight.
"Not another one," Gorld said. "Do you really think you can beat me?" Zell nodded contently. Gorld laughed evilly.
Zell punched her in the face. Gorld began to grow angry and advanced to fight back.
"You don't hurt my girlfriend and get away with it!" Zell shouted. Gorld began to back off nervously. She had already given herself off as a coward seeking power. "Get your ass back here!"
Gorld made a run for it, but Zell grabbed her by the arm. He kicked her in the stomach and tossed her. She stood back up, but leaned over in pain.
Gorld made her way towards Zell and prepared for a kick. Zell dodged it and sent her flying in the air with a Booya. Gorld landed face flat on the floor of Garden. After a moment she stood up.
"I have been freed! I can't lose!" She screamed indignantly as she landed a kick in Zell's stomach. Zell fell back, but he got right back and punched her in the face.
"You're just gonna hafta lose this time!" he screamed at her angrily. She finally fell unconscious. Zell stood over her with a triumphant look on his face. He suddenly turned and ran back to Lina.
"Lina!" he said. "Lina, she's gone now! It's safe. Oh come on...please wake up!" He held her in his arms and carried her over to the infirmary.
Dr. Kadowaki laid her down in a bed and tended to her wounds.
"What happened?" demanded the doctor. Zell looked at her incredulously, not believing that she had missed the entire battle that everyone else hadn't been able to keep their eyes off of.
"The sorceress came...and they fought," Zell replied simply after a moment.
"She took the sorceress on alone? How could you have let her?!" the doctor asked, astounded.
"Uh...she's a sorceress too...ya know?" Zell informed her. Dr. Kadowaki flinched, but then continued to take care of her injuries.
Chapter Fifteen
Lina had been hit badly. She lied in the infirmary for three days. She had dreams about her past. Everything seemed to fit again. It was like a movie of her life had been replayed in her mind. Those three days had healed her brain.
Lina opened her eyes slowly. It was late at night. The waning moon shone brightly through the window blinds. With the light of the moon she could see someone sitting in the chair beside her with his or her head tilted to the side. The person was asleep and silently dreaming. Lina smiled and sighed warmly. She then closed her eyes wearily and went back to sleep.
When she awoke in the morning she saw Zell sitting wide awake in the same chair that had carried the sleeping figure and was staring intently at her.
"Lina! You're finally awake," Zell shouted happily. Lina sat up, confused. Zell walked calmly to the bed and sat down next to her. "It's alright now. Gorld's gone." Lina rested her head on his shoulder. His warmth helped to heal her.
"Zell...I remember everything. Meeting you guys when you first became SeeDs, time compression... everything," Lina said. Zell smiled warmly and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. He looked into her eyes and saw that the emptiness had now been filled with the knowledge and wisdom that Zell was so used to.
At this moment Rinoa, Squall, Quistis, Selphie, and Irvine all appeared at the door.
"Lina! You're alright!" Rinoa said. They all came in a little closer, cautious of invading her space.
"She's remembers everything now," Zell explained shortly, eyes fixed on Lina.
"Everything?" Selphie asked and all of their eyes lightened up as the burden of being furtive disappeared.
"Everything," Zell confirmed. They beamed at one another and sat down next to her. It was like a giant reunion of friends. They all talked and laughed. They shared memories and had a great time.
Lina was glad to be back. She was extremely happy that she had finally uncovered her past; it meant so much to her. She found herself smiling more than ever, especially when she was with Zell.
At night, everyone but Zell left Lina's room in the Infirmary. Zell had promised to stay by her side.
"You know, I was afraid I had actually lost you," Zell mumbled to her. He still had his arm wrapped around her shoulder and he held her closer than ever.
Lina leaned against his shoulder and he stroked her hair. "If I had died, I would have waited for you in heaven," Lina smiled. She looked directly into his gentle blue eyes. He looked back at her coffee brown ones. They moved closer together and kissed. It was the kiss of true love. They promised to be there for eachother forever. They were never separated again.
The End
Lina's sorceress powers were transferred to Zell by the most powerful magic in all of the lands, the strongest of human emotions: Love

Epilogue
It was the night of the ball. All SeeDs were there. Lina arrived in a beautiful white gown. She spotted Zell by the snack table and approached him.
"Lina, you look great!" Zell said as he handed her a bouquet of flowers.
"Thank you Zell, they're lovely," Lina said as she gave him a big hug. She smiled at him, making her round eyes more into a half circle. The orchestra began to play a song. Zell motioned for them to dance. Lina set the flowers down gently and followed him to the dance floor.
Together they danced and had a wonderful time. Sally stood in the corner of the room and watched them sadly. She glanced at the side of the snack table and saw Seifer, looking annoyed and lonely.
She advanced towards him and greeted him, "Hey, Seifer... you dancing with anyone?"
"No..." Seifer replied angrily. He stared at her menacingly. "Apparently not."
"Would you like to dance with me?" Sally asked him. Seifer rolled his eyes and pulled her onto the dance floor violently.
"You know what, Zell?" Lina whispered into his ear. "I don't remember ever telling you this... but...I love you."
Zell kissed her again and replied, "I've always loved you."
